Chromatin-remodeling for transcription

Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, 2017
AbstractThe nucleosome serves as a general gene repressor, preventing all initiation of transcription except that which is brought about by specific positive regulatory mechanisms. The positive mechanisms begin with chromatin-remodeling by complexes that slide, disrupt, or otherwise alter the structure and organization of nucleosomes.

Chromatin remodeling in plants

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2001
In the past two years, a variety of forward genetic screens have revealed predicted plant chromatin remodeling components that are involved in either differential histone acetylation or ATP-dependent SWI2/SNF2-related complexes. Combined with the results of recent reverse genetic studies, these findings have begun to provide the groundwork for ...

Control of Chromatin Remodeling

Critical Reviews™ in Eukaryotic Gene Expression, 2000
Chromatin structure has a pivotal role in the regulation of gene expression. Transcriptional activation or the repression of a gene require the recruitment of multiple chromatin remodeling complexes. Chromatin remodeling complexes modulate the higher order structure of chromatin, facilitate or hinder the binding of transcription factors, and aid in or ...

SUMO and Chromatin Remodeling

2017
Many of the known SUMO substrates are nuclear proteins, which regulate gene expression and chromatin dynamics. Sumoylation, in general, appears to correlate with decreased transcriptional activity, and in many cases modulation of the chromatin template is implicated.

ATP-Dependent Chromatin Remodeling

2004
The study of chromatin and how this dynamic structure modulates events in the eukaryotic nucleus has become an increasingly important topic in biomedical research. A large number of enzymes have been discovered that are responsible for modifying and altering chromatin structure, either globally or specifically at particular gene promoters or regions of

Chromatin Remodeling and Transcription

Journal of Biochemistry, 1998
The chromatin structure is essential not only for the compact packaging of the eukaryotic genome but also for regulation of transcription. This article provides an overview of chromatin modification upon transcriptional activation or repression, and chromatin remodeling.

ATP-Dependent Chromatin Remodeling

2012
In the eukaryotic nucleus, processes of DNA metabolism such as transcription, DNA replication, and repair occur in the context of DNA packaged into nucleosomes and higher order chromatin structures. In order to overcome the barrier presented by chromatin structures to the protein machinery carrying out these processes, the cell relies on a class of ...
