Biomonitoring genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of Microcystis aeruginosa (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria) using the Allium cepa test

Science of the Total Environment, 2012
Water pollution caused by toxic cyanobacteria is a problem worldwide, increasing with eutrophication. Due to its biological significance, genotoxicity should be a focus for biomonitoring pollution owing to the increasing complexity of the toxicological environment in which organisms are exposed.

Physico-chemical parameters governing the growth of Aphanothece halophytica (Chroococcales) in hypersaline media

Phycologia, 1978
Abstract The effects of variation in major physico-chemical parameters on the growth of the Chroococcalean blue-green alga, Aphanothece halophytica in hypersaline media (2–4 m NaCl) were determined. Growth in media of varying salinity was influenced by interactions of light, temperature and CO2. Observed doubling times of 14·5, 18·0 and 30·0 h in 2, 3,

Iron superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) localization in Chroococcidiopsis sp. (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria)

Phycologia, 1996
Abstract One-month-old and 1-year-old cultures of Chroococcidiopsis sp. were examined for the presence and distribution of iron superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) by immunogold labelling. In 1-month-old cultures, comprising cell aggregates, Fe-SOD was localized mainly in the nucleoplasm and in the cell envelope.

Effects of nitrogen limitation and starvation on Chroococcidiopsis sp. (Chroococcales)

New Phytologist, 1996
summary Chroococcidiopsis sp. cells from hot desert rock (Timna National Park, Israel) were grown in modified BG‐11 medium which was either N‐free or which contained different concentrations of nitrogen, provided as nitrate. The life cycle, ultrastructure and physiological activities of the cyanobacterium were investigated over a period of 4 months. No

Lemmermanniella flexa Hindák (Cyanoprokaryota, Chroococcales) in South America

Algological Studies/Archiv für Hydrobiologie, Supplement Volumes, 2003
We report the first record for South America of the cyanophycean species Lemmermanniella flexa HINDAK, from a eutrophic urban water body, Planetario Pond, located in Buenos Aires City, Argentina. The genus Lemmermanniella GEITLER is recorded for the first time in this country and the species L. flexa is recorded for the first time after its description

HIP1 DNA fingerprinting in Microcystis panniformis (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria)

Phycologia, 2007
Abstract Microcystis panniformis is a planktonic freshwater cyanobacterium that has become increasingly prevalent in tropical water bodies in Brazil. Recently, it has been shown that the strain BCCUSP100 is able to produce microcystins (MCs, especially, MC-LR and [Asp3]-MC-LR), which are toxins that can affect the health of humans and other animals ...
