Rthoptera: Standardised insect bioacoustics in R

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1084-1094, June 2025.
Abstract Almost 100 years after the dawn of insect bioacoustics, freely available and robust analysis tools and protocols are still needed. We introduce Rthoptera, an open‐source R package designed for robust analysis of insect acoustic signals. It delivers accurate temporal and spectral measurements, along with intuitive visualisations, through a ...

The impact of land use on the acoustic behaviour of cicadas in the Chocó lowland tropical forest of Ecuador

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 18, Issue 2, Page 177-190, March 2025.
Our study revealed a lower cicada sound activity in active agriculture compared to undisturbed old‐growth forest which increased along the forest recovery gradient. Diurnal patterns of cicada singing activity changed from simple in active agriculture to more complex and highly synchronized along the recovery gradient towards old‐growth forests.

An Annotated List of Phytophagous Insects Collected on Immature Black Walnut Trees in Southern Illinois [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
An annotated list of phytophagous insects on immature black walnut in southern Illinois was compiled between 26 April, 1974, and 9 October, 1975. Approximately 300 species, in 10 orders, were collected by hand-picking and sweeping.

Comparative Analysis of Mitogenomes in Leafhopper Tribe Deltocephalini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae): Structural Conservatism and Phylogeny

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 12, December 2024.
In this study, we sequenced the complete mitogenomes of 14 species belonging to four genera of tribe Deltocephalini from China and compared them with the two previously reported mitogenomes for this tribe. Phylogenetic analysis of different combinations of protein‐coding and ribosomal genes using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference under ...

Extending Species‐Area Relationships Into the Realm of Ecoacoustics: The Soundscape‐Area Relationship

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2024.
In this study, we expanded the principles of island biogeography to the field of ecoacoustics. We examined the relative importance of island size and isolation in predicting the spectro‐temporal richness of acoustic traits in the landscape, also known as soundscape richness.
