Thermal responses in some Eastern Cape African Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Thermal responses were measured in cicadas collected in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The thermal responses of 22 species from 5 biomes were determined. Shade-seeking temperature was the most variable and related to the various biomes.

Global climate change‐driven impacts on the Asian distribution of Limassolla leafhoppers, with implications for biological and environmental conservation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 7, July 2024.
This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of Limassolla based on different Shared Socio‐economic Pathways and climate scenarios, incorporating theories and methods from insect ecology, environmental ecology, and biogeography. The results indicated that Limassolla is mainly distributed in East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia,

Spring Temperature Predicts the Long-term Molting Phenology of Two Cicadas, Cryptotympana facialis and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
To investigate how seasonal insects respond to changing environments, nymphal skins of the two cicadas Cryptotympana facialis (Walker) and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata (Motschulsky) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) were monitored weekly from late July to August ...

Acoustic communication in Okanagana rimosa (Say) (Homoptera: Cicadidae)

open access: yesZoology, 2004
The cicada Okanagana rimosa (Say) has an acoustic communication system with three types of loud timbal sounds: (i) A calling song lasting several seconds to about 1 min which consists of a sequence of chirps at a repetition rate of 83 chirps per second. Each chirp of about 6 ms duration contains 4-5 pulses.

Proteomic diversification of spermatostyles among six species of whirligig beetles

open access: yesMolecular Reproduction and Development, Volume 91, Issue 5, May 2024.
Whirligig beetle sperm travel cooperatively through the female reproductive tract attached to a spermatostyle, a poorly studied rod‐like structure. Proteome characterization revealed that spermatostyles are comprised of a restricted set of proteases and possess catalytic activity.

Record of Carineta Amyot and Audinet-Serville, 1843 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae: Cicadettinae: Carinetini) in Goiás State, Brazil

open access: yesBiotemas, 2018
Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) are insects characterized mainly by the sound they emit, which makes their presence evident in natural and urban areas. Beyond this, we know little about the species that occur in the neotropical region, including Brazil ...

Endothermy in African Platypleurine Cicadas: the influence of body size and habitat (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The platypleurine cicadas have a wide distribution across Africa and southern Asia. We investigate endothermy as a thermoregulatory strategy in 11 South African species from five genera, with comparisons to the lone ectothermic platypleurine we found, in
