US State Policy Index for Population Health Analyses

open access: yesThe Milbank Quarterly, EarlyView.
Policy Points Changes in states’ policy contexts since the 1980s may help explain why mortality rates among working‐age adults have risen and become more unequal across geographic areas. Investigating this pressing issue requires a new, industry‐standard measure of those contexts.

Brand switching and toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke: A national study

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2018
US law requires disclosure of quantities of toxic chemicals (constituents) in cigarette smoke by brand and sub-brand. This information may drive smokers to switch to cigarettes with lower chemical quantities, under the misperception that doing so can reduce health risk.

The toxic effects of electronic cigarette aerosol and cigarette smoke on cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and renal systems in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
AbstractElectronic cigarette (EC) has been suggested to be less harmful than cigarette smoking, but the research on the full extent of their harm reduction potential is still lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of EC aerosol and cigarette smoke (CS) on cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal functions in mice after prolonged ...

Examining the role of freebase nicotine in the harm reduction potential of oral nicotine pouches versus moist snuff: A randomized crossover trial

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aims Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) contain varying proportions of freebase nicotine (FBN), with higher FBN expected to increase nicotine delivery across the oral mucosa. Because ONPs contain fewer toxicants than moist snuff and may serve as a reduced harm alternative for smokeless tobacco, we compared how the FBN in ONPs affects ...
