Cilia-to-Cilia Communication

Science Signaling, 2003
Many organisms, including humans, exhibit left-right (L-R) asymmetry in addition to bilateral symmetry. Molecular asymmetry, in the form of asymmetrically localized expression of lateralized genes, such as nodal , lefty-2 , and Pitx2 occurs before visible asymmetry ...

Cilia transport

The Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics, 1972
An analysis of the effect of cilia on fluid transport in tubules is presented. The applicability of the results for the flow rates observed in the ductus efferentes of the male tract is discussed.

Cilia and cilia-related disorders

New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 2006
Abstract Extract Among the puzzling aspects of the recently described autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) of sheep (Johnstone et al 2005) is the multiplicity of organ systems affected and the phenotypic variations that occur between the various animal species.

Alignment of cilia in immotile-cilia syndrome

Tissue and Cell, 1986
Alignment of cilia in nasal epithelial cells from eight human subjects suffering from immotile-cilia syndrome was compared with that of cells from five control subjects. Individual cilia were assessed according to the orientation of their basal feet. The range of orientation of basal feet on a single cell varied from 26 degrees to 261 degrees and 54 ...

Zebrafish Cilia

2013
Zebrafish are ideally suited for analysis of genes required for ciliogenesis and cilia function. Combining genetic manipulation with high quality in vivo imaging, zebrafish embryos provide a high-throughput system for annotation of the cilia proteome.

A bio-inspired cilia array as the dielectric layer for flexible capacitive pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a broad detection range

Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 2019
A cilia array via a magnetic field was proposed as the dielectric layer for flexible capacitive sensors with high sensitivity and a broad detection range.

Artificial cilia

2009
Manipulation of bio-fluids in microchannels faces many challenges in the development of lab-on-a-chip devices. We propose magnetically actuated artificial cilia which can propel fluids in microchannels. These cilia are magnetic films which can be actuated by an external magnetic field, leading to an asymmetric motion like that of natural cilia.

The Missing Cilia

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1976
Bjorn A. Afzelius, 1 who for many years has been interested in cilia of one sort or another, describes in a recent issue of Science a bizarre, inborn disorder in four men who, while seeming to possess respectable sperms, have nothing with which to propel them. The sperm are immobile.
