Microbial Ecology, 2015
Several ciliated protists form symbiotic associations with a diversity of microorganisms, leading to drastic impact on their ecology and evolution. In this work, two Euplotes spp. sampled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were identified based on morphological and molecular features as Euplotes woodruffi strain Sq1 and E.

During a survey of parasitic ciliates in Chongqing, China, Trichodina matsu Basson & Van As, 1994 was isolated from gills of Tachysurus fulvidraco. Furthermore, the 18S rRNA gene and ITS-5.8S rRNA region of T. matsu were sequenced for the first time and applied for the species identification and comparison with similar species in the present study.

Abstract Lambornella clarki was a common parasite of Aedes sierrensis immatures collected from treeholes in Mendocino County, California, in 1982–1983. The ciliate was not found in mosquitoes from treeholes with water having the most extreme values of electrical conductivity ( 1.74 mmhos/cm) and pH ( 7.7).

Abstract Co-infections with ectoparasites and bacteria commonly occur in fish farms and are associated with high mortality. In March 2020, a private Nile tilapia (Oreochromus niloticus) farm in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, experienced high fish mortality, and the clinically diseased fish were characterized by lethargy, abnormal swimming behavior, loss

Unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) dinucleotides flanked by specific bases in bacterial DNA induce a favorable immune response by acting as danger signals to the host. Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides containing CpG motifs (CpG-ODNs) also act like the unmethylated CpG oligonucleotides in bacterial DNA.

Infections of Stentor roeseli and S. polymorphus (Ciliophora, Heterotrichida) by microsporidia
Parasitology Research, 1987In cells of the ciliated protozoa Stentor polymorphus and S. roeseli, infections by microsporidia were observed. In both stentors, the microsporidia were maintained in the laboratory and new cells could be infected when transferred to a culture of parasitized cells. The parasites were more pathogenic on S. roeseli than on S.

Philasterides dicentrarchi is a histophagous ciliate infecting turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) in aquaculture, where it causes significant economic losses. However, the route of entry of these parasites in turbot is not known. In the present study, we attempted experimental infection by seven routes: nasal, oral, rectal, branchial/dermal (i.e.

A new species of Trichodina Ehrenberg, 1830 collected from the skin and fins of farmed North African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) fingerlings, is described. The new species can be distinguished from other trichodinids by the characteristics of the adhesive disc, especially by the great number of denticles. Trichodina merciae n. sp.

To determine whether olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) immunized with lysate of Philasterides dicentrarchi could be protected immobilization antigen (i-antigen) type independently, fish were immunized with lysate of ciliates obtained from in vitro cultures or ciliates obtained from infected fish.

Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora), isolated from the reef fish, Grammistes sexlineatus Thumberg, was established as primary infections in mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso). Only a small percentage (<22%) of exposed theronts established infection under controlled conditions. This is discussed in relation to the probability of host parasite
