Alterations of club cell activity in epidermis of common carp, Cyprinus carpio (Actinopterygii: Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), due to infection by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Protista: Ciliophora) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2011
Background. The abundance of club cells in epidermal tissue of fishes in the superorder Ostariophysi is a poorly understood phenomenon. Previous results have suggested that epidermal club cells have a generic role in response to injury and that they display intense phagocytotic activity, having an anti-parasitic function in the host.

Assessment of the microbial communities associated with white syndrome and brown jelly syndrome in aquarium corals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Bacterial and ciliate assemblages associated with aquarium corals displaying white syndrome (WS) and brown jelly syndrome (BJS) were investigated. Healthy (n = 10) and diseased corals (WS n = 18; BJS n = 3) were analysed for 16S rRNA gene bacterial ...

Encystation:the most prevalent and underinvestigated differentiation pathway of eukaryotes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Not long ago, protists were considered one of four eukaryote kingdoms, but recent gene-based phylogenies show that they contribute to all nine eukaryote subdomains.

INFECÇÃO COM TROFOZOÍTOS DE Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (CILIOPHORA) EM Poecilia vivipara (POECILIIDAE) COMO HOSPEDEIRO EXPERIMENTAL INFECTION WITH TROPHOZOITES OF Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (CILIOPHORA) IN Poecilia vivipara (POECILIIDAE) AS AN EXPERIMENTAL HOST

INFECTION WITH TROPHOZOITES OF Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (CILIOPHORA) IN Poecilia vivipara (POECILIIDAE) AS AN EXPERIMENTAL HOST

open access: yes, 2007
This experiment studied the parasitic degree in Poecilia vivipara experimentally infected by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis trophozoites. In flasks with 400 mL of water, four fish were maintained with constant aeration in two replicates and added 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 20 trophozoites/fish. Mean values of water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were 19.
