Energy and circular transition of the industrial heritage – The Ex SNIA case in Rome

open access: yesAgathón
The paper presents the outcomes of research activities focused on disused industrial heritage sites understood as a strategic resource for the energy and circular transition, through the adoption of regenerative actions capable of triggering new ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Negative refractive index due to chirality

open access: yes, 2009
We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that metamaterials based on bilayer cross wires give giant optical activity, circular dichroism, and negative refractive index.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Research Status and Development Trend of Non-circular Gears

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2023
Non-circular gear transmission is a new type of mechanical transmission mechanism relative to circular gear transmission, which can realize special movement, improve mechanism performance and improve mechanism motion conditions.

Generic composite flywheel designs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Fiber reinforced composites belong to a new class of materials and allow great flexibility in flywheel design. The most efficient flywheel may no longer have the classic Stodola taper and indeed, may not even be round.

Circular Design and Consumer Involvement in Circular Economy [PDF]

open access: yesStudia Commercialia Bratislavensia, 2020
Abstract The circular economy is an approach to help reduce global sustainability pressures. In circular economy it is important to involve design from the beginning of the product lifecycle, including product ideation and material selection. Involvement of consumers and users into circular economy is very important and enables change in

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Going circular with what we wear and how we build: parallelisms between the Dutch and French catwalks of fashion and construction

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainability
Responding to the call for circular transition, the Dutch and French governments aspire to achieve a fully circular economy by developing a transitional agenda in various sectors, including fashion and construction. The two countries are among the top 10

Omnidirectional refractive devices for flexural waves based on graded phononic crystals

open access: yes, 2014
Different omnidirectional refractive devices for flexural waves in thin plates are proposed and numerically analyzed. Their realization is explained by means phononic crystal plates, where a previously developed homogenization theory is employed for the ...
