The physical nature of circumgalactic medium absorbers in Simba

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ABSTRACT We study the nature of the low-redshift circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the Simba  cosmological simulations as traced by ultraviolet absorption lines around galaxies in bins of stellar mass ($\mbox{$M_\star $}\, > 10^{10}{\rm M}_\odot$) for star-forming, green valley and quenched galaxies at impact parameters r⊥ ≤ 1.25r200.

Regulation of Star Formation by a Hot Circumgalactic Medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Galactic outflows driven by supernovae (SNe) are thought to be a powerful regulator of a galaxy’s star-forming efficiency. Mass, energy, and metal outflows ( η _M , η _E , and η _Z , here normalized by the star formation rate, the SNe energy, and metal ...

Key Physical Processes in the Circumgalactic Medium

open access: yesAnnual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2023
Spurred by rich, multiwavelength observations and enabled by new simulations, ranging from cosmological to subparsec scales, the past decade has seen major theoretical progress in our understanding of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We review key physical processes in the CGM. Our conclusions include the following: ▪The properties of the CGM depend on

The SUPERCOLD-CGM Survey. I. Probing the Extended CO(4–3) Emission of the Circumgalactic Medium in a Sample of 10 Enormous Lyα Nebulae at z ∼ 2

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
To understand how massive galaxies at high z coevolve with enormous reservoirs of halo gas, it is essential to study the coldest phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), which directly relates to stellar growth.

Probing extreme black‐hole outflows on short timescales via high spectral‐resolution x‐ray imagers

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 6-7, July-August 2024.
Abstract We investigate outflows and the physics of super‐Eddington versus sub‐Eddington regimes in black hole systems. Our focus is on prospective science using next‐generation high‐resolution soft x‐ray instruments. We highlight the properties of black hole ultraluminous x‐ray source (ULX) systems in particular. Owing to scale invariance in accreting

Analyzing Oxygen Ionization in the Circumgalactic Medium

open access: yesResearch Notes of the AAS, 2021
Abstract Galaxies are surrounded by low-density, highly-ionized clouds of gas, called the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM), which provides insight into galaxy evolution. CGM observations are sensitive to ionization levels, which requires studying ionization types: photoionization (PI), more density-dependent and associated with cooler gas ...

Figuring Out Gas and Galaxies in Enzo (FOGGIE). IX. The Angular Momentum Evolution of Milky Way–like Galaxies and Their Circumgalactic Gas

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We investigate the coevolution of the angular momentum of Milky Way–like galaxies, their circumgalactic gas, and their dark matter halos using zoom-in simulations from the Figuring Out Gas and Galaxies in Enzo suite.

Gas Kinematics in the Multiphase Circumgalactic Medium [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2016
AbstractWe use high-resolution Keck, VLT, or Hubble Space Telescope spectra of background quasars to examine the kinematic properties of the multiphase, metal-enriched circumgalactic medium in the outskirts of galaxies at 0.08 < zgal < 1.0, focusing on the low-ionization Mgii and high-ionization Ovi doublets.

On the Origin of High-velocity Clouds in the Galaxy

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The origin of our Galaxy’s high-velocity clouds (HVCs) remains a mystery after many decades of effort. In this paper, we use the TNG50 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to identify cool, dense clouds that match observations of Galactic H i HVCs.
