The Neutrophil‐To‐Lymphocyte Ratio as an Associated Biomarker of Diabetic Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with chronic low‐grade systemic inflammation. This study evaluated the neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a practical inflammatory biomarker in T2DM. A cross‐sectional study was conducted in Hodeidah City among 82 participants: 42 T2DM patients and 40 healthy controls.

Unfractionated Heparin and Low‐Molecular‐Weight Heparin in Sepsis: Anti‐Inflammatory and Anticoagulant Effects Versus No Anticoagulation—A Propensity Score‐Matched Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
This propensity score‐matched study compared unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low‐molecular‐weight heparin (LMWH) in 1362 sepsis patients, finding that both significantly improved survival without increasing 90‐day bleeding risk. However, their therapeutic mechanisms differed: UFH demonstrated broader anti‐inflammatory effects by reducing IL‐6, IL‐8 ...

Development and Analytical Validation of a Smartphone‐Based Quantitative Lateral Flow Immunoassay for Serum Cystatin‐C

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
We developed a gold nanoparticle‐based lateral flow immunoassay that pairs a fixed‐geometry smartphone reader with an Android application for quantitative serum Cystatin‐C measurement. The 15‐min assay covered 0.32–8.00 mg/L with a 0.15 mg/L detection limit and CVs below 10%.

Old disease, new twist

open access: yesJournal of Hospital Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract An 81‐year‐old man with a history of high‐grade urothelial carcinoma of the bladder and ureter on treatment with atezolizumab and tiragolumab presented to the emergency department with 5 months of malaise, generalized weakness, and fatigue and 2 weeks of subjective fevers. One month prior to presentation, he received an empiric 9‐day course of

Early prediction of acute kidney injury in traumatic and non‐traumatic rhabdomyolysis using an interpretable machine learning model: A multicenter study with external validation

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and severe complication of rhabdomyolysis (RM), and early risk stratification remains challenging because of its multifactorial and heterogeneous nature. We developed and externally validated an interpretable machine learning (ML) model for early prediction of AKI in RM across traumatic and non‐traumatic ...

Urine diagnostics in paediatric intestinal failure: A prospective cohort study of alternative sampling methods

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Regular monitoring of urinary electrolyte excretion and kidney function is essential in children with intestinal failure (IF) receiving long‐term parenteral nutrition (PN). This study evaluated alternative urine sampling methods against 24‐h urine collection (UC) and assessed the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal ...
