2D Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials and Devices for Ultralow Power Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
2D magnets and topological quantum materials enable ultralow‐power spintronics by combining robust magnetic order with symmetry‐protected, Berry‐curvature‐driven transport. Fundamentals of 2D anisotropy and spin‐orbit‐coupling induced band inversion are linked to scalable growth and vdW stacking.

Doing Quantitative Grounded Theory: A review

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal, 2008
Whenever I review materials I do so with three eyes. One is as an educator of Ph.D. students who are just beginning their knowledge research methodologies. Another eye is towards the needs of the Ph.D. student in the midst of crafting and defending their

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

The Hook: Getting your grounded theory research published

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal, 2009
I learned about the hook as a fledgling writer back in the late 70’s, and early 80s. I wrote about stepfamilies when almost nobody else did (Stern, 1978, 1982a, 1982b).

Application of Natural Language Processing and Evidential Analysis to Web-Based Intelligence Information Acquisition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The quality of decisions made in business and government relates directly to the quality of the information used to formulate the decision. This information may be retrieved from an organization's knowledge base (Intranet) or from the World Wide Web ...

From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

Classic Grounded Theory

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal
Grounded Theory continues to be the most widely used methodology in qualitative research. Although it is based on what people do naturally (to act habitually and a tendency to theorise), it can be confusing for those new to the methodology, particularly

A Novice Researcher’s First Walk Through the Maze of Grounded Theory: Rationalization for Classical Grounded Theory

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal, 2013
Being new to grounded theory the onus to understand the methodology and the various versions can be daunting. Learning and understanding the differences between grounded theories methodologies can be as much a learning of one’s own research philosophy ...

Understanding homelessness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper reviews the literature on understanding homelessness. It criticizes approaches that ignore, distort or diminish the humanity of homeless people, or else, add little to our understanding of that humanity. In particular, it rejects what it calls
