Beyond the NAO: The East Atlantic Pattern's Role in Early 20th‐Century Meteorological Droughts in Western Europe

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 45, Issue 13, 15 November 2025.
The study highlights the East Atlantic (EA) pattern's dominant role in shaping early 20th‐century winter climate variability in Western Europe, surpassing the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). An intensified Icelandic Low and Azores High are better captured by EA's variability and altered precipitation patterns, particularly over the Iberian Peninsula.

Is There a Precipitation Decline in the Mediterranean Region? An Assessment Based on the Scientific Literatured

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 45, Issue 9, July 2025.
We have compiled research published since 1980 on annual precipitation trends in the Mediterranean basin. A total of 337 papers were analysed, with the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of the available research, rather than evaluating the quality of the data, methods, or interpretations.

Too‐stable North Atlantic climate system in CMIP6 experiments undermines precipitation projections in Europe

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 151, Issue 771, July 2025 Part B.
An original method is applied to identify distinct periods of observed NAO spatial patterns, evaluating the ability of state‐of‐the‐art climate models to reproduce them. Their poor representation of this multidecadal variability increases uncertainty in winter precipitation projections for Europe and likely broad regions of the Northern Hemisphere ...

Volcanic Radiative Power Retrieval From Moderate‐to‐Low‐Temperature Features Using a Single TIR Band: Validation Using Volcanic Crater Lakes and Hydrothermal Systems

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 12, 28 June 2025.
Abstract Assessing Radiative Power (RP) output is essential for monitoring and understanding volcanic systems. While Mid‐Infrared channels are used to assess thermal outputs at volcanoes exhibiting effusive activity, Thermal‐InfraRed (TIR) bands are better suited for measuring moderate‐to‐low‐temperature (≲600 K) features, such as those associated with

Aridity on the Rise: Spatial and Temporal Shifts in Climate Aridity in Spain (1961–2020)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 45, Issue 6, May 2025.
Climate aridity increased between 1961 and 1990 and 1991–2020 in Spain, with 12% of peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands transitioning towards more arid climate categories, while almost no areas transitioned towards more humid conditions. In the Canary Islands, 16% of the territory transitioned towards more arid categories.

Catalogue and Analysis of Extraordinary Precipitation Events in the Spanish Mainland, 1916–2022

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 45, Issue 6, May 2025.
From 1916 to 2022, 12.4% of days recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm, and 1.4% of days rainfall was over 200 mm in some stations in the Spanish mainland. These events are located particularly along the coastland areas, with the highest values mainly in the east and southern parts of the country.
