Inhibitor of DNA binding‐1 is a key regulator of cancer cell vasculogenic mimicry

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Elevated expression of transcriptional regulator inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1) promoted cancer cell‐mediated vasculogenic mimicry (VM) through regulation of pro‐angiogenic and pro‐cancerous genes (e.g. VE‐cadherin (CDH5), TIE2, MMP9, DKK1). Higher ID1 expression also increased metastases to the lung and the liver.

Amyloid-β misfolding as a plasma biomarker indicates risk for future clinical Alzheimer’s disease in individuals with subjective cognitive decline

open access: yesAlzheimer’s Research & Therapy, 2020
Background We evaluated Aβ misfolding in combination with Aβ42/40 ratio as a prognostic tool for future clinical progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in individuals with subjective cognitive decline ...

Hydrophobicity causes anomalous migration of cystine/glutamate antiporter SLC7A11 in SDS‐PAGE with low acrylamide concentration

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
SLC7A11 frequently migrates faster in SDS‐PAGE. The present study found that the high hydrophobicity of SLC7A11 causes its anomalous migration in SDS‐PAGE with a low concentration of acrylamide gel. Replacing isoleucine with asparagine reduced hydrophobicity and restored its normal migration at 55 kDa, revealing the role of hydrophobicity and gel ...

Teaching perspectives on the communication of difficult news of genetic conditions to medical students

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, Volume 191, Issue 1, Page 299-305, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Informing parents that their child has a diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) is a common example of the delivery of unexpected or difficult news. Expectations and life planning will change, and if detected prenatally, discussions might include the option of pregnancy termination.

Evaluation of clinical competence in nephrologists

open access: yesKidney International, 1988
A formal process for voluntary certification of nephrologists was introduced by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in 1972. Five years later, the ABIM published guidelines for the training of nephrologists in the recognition that individuals could be held to the standard implied by certification only if their training in nephrology was of ...

Methods for working with problem residents in medical physics residency education

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Medical physics residency training programs may occasionally encounter residents requiring additional intervention beyond normal training efforts. In the literature, these residents are referred to as “problem” residents. While the physician literature on the subject is valuable, this paper specifically focuses on dealing with a problem ...

Statistical inference methods for cumulative incidence function curves at a fixed point in time [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation, 2018, 2018
Competing risks data arise frequently in clinical trials. When the proportional subdistribution hazard assumption is violated or two cumulative incidence function (CIF) curves cross, rather than comparing the overall treatment effects, researchers may be interested in focusing on a comparison of clinical utility at some fixed time points.
