Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Decoding the dynamic extracellular matrix in cancer—3D models and bioscaffolds rewire the rules of tumor progression

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer progression is regulated by the dynamic matrix code of the tumor microenvironment, which influences cellular behavior and disease development. Importantly, matrix remodeling in three‐dimensional cancer models more accurately reflects in vivo conditions compared to conventional two‐dimensional systems.

Estimating long COVID-19 prevalence across definitions and forms of sample selection

open access: yesFrontiers in Epidemiology
IntroductionLong COVID (LC) is a multisystem condition with prolonged symptoms persisting beyond acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, prevalence estimates vary widely due to differences in case definitions and sampling methodologies.

Improving clinical research

open access: yesBMJ, 2003
Failure to support clinical research now will cost human lives later In the post-genome era, clinical research couldn't be simpler. Exposure to human disease stimulates an enquiring mind to investigate underlying pathogenesis or new therapeutictargets. New functions are ascribed to genes that shed new light on cellular biology.

The Essential Role of the Clinical Research Nurse (CRN)

open access: yes, 2010
In an age of increasing focus on expanding the opportunity of clinical research trial participation to broader patient populations, the clinical research nurse (CRN) has become an essential member of the clinical research team. The CRN is responsible for

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.
