A nonlinear clinotron theory

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2010
A model and a system of equations for investigation of the nonlinear regime of a clinotron are presented. Calculations are performed and physical interpretation of obtained results and specific features of manifestation of the clinotron effect for different sheet beam thicknesses and inclination angles to the surface of the slow-wave system is given ...

Spectral Characteristics of THz CW Clinotrons

IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 2020
The spectral properties of terahertz (THz) continuous-wave (CW) clinotrons have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. The resonant properties of clinotrons having strong influence on the spectral linewidth have been analyzed both for the frequencies below 150 GHz where resonances are determined by reflections of surface wave, and for THz ...

Following-wave amplification mode of a clinotron

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2016
The following-wave amplification mode of a model of the clinotron with linear electron trajectories is studied in the framework of linear and nonlinear theories. It is demonstrated that the clinotron effect is absent in the linear mode, since the amplification factor is maximized at zero angle between the beam and the surface of the slow-wave structure.

Efficient Excitation of Hybrid Modes in a THz Clinotron

Journal of Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves, 2021
Various regimes of hybrid, bulk-surface, modes being excited in the clinotron oscillator with a sheet electron beam and nonuniform grating have been studied theoretically. It is shown that higher output power of the hybrid mode in comparison with pure surface or bulk modes is due to an increase of a feedback and efficiency of the radiation output ...

On the clinotron effect in a backward-wave tube

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2017
The results of a theoretical study of the clinotron effect in a clinotron model, which takes into account static electron trajectories in the focusing magnetic field and the initial spacing between the lower beam boundary and the surface of the slow-wave structure, are presented.

Self-modulation of the output signal in clinotron

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2014
It is demonstrated that the self-modulation of the output signal in clinotron results from a delayed response of the distributed system of clinotron to the action of nonlinearity in the interaction of layers of a thick electron beam and high-frequency field.

Mode Interaction in Clinotron with Periodically Modified Grating

2021 46th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz), 2021
The interaction of the modes with different variations along grating lamella occurring in a clinotron with periodically modified grating due to the profile of the clinotron circuit cross-section, has been studied. The simulation results demonstrate the interaction of the sheet electron beam with two modes, which differ in the transverse index, at the ...

Potential of the Clinotron for THz-Generation

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006
Advances in the design, realization, and investigation of the clinotron, which is a modification of the backward‐wave oscillator, are discussed. A series of clinotron tubes operating throughout the millimeter‐ and submillimeter‐wave bands is presented, and the results of their testing are reported. A theoretical approach to the problem of electron‐wave

Development of CW clinotron oscillator at 400 GHz

2012 International Conference on Mathematical Methods in Electromagnetic Theory, 2012
Backward Wave Oscillators are the most established vacuum electronic devices for THz and near-THz applications. The most powerful of these VEDs are BWO-clinotrons. Design process of 400 GHz Clinotron and its magnetic focusing system using 3D and 2D electromagnetic computer codes is presented.

Numerical and experimental investigation of 0.1 THz clinotron

2012 37th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves, 2012
A 0.1 THz 10 W clinotron is numerically and experimentally investigated for compact high-power terahertz radiation source. The output characteristics of the clinotron with the inclined sheet electron beam are examined by using the 3D particle-in-cell simulation code MAGIC and are compared with the measurements.
