Initiation of cloud-to-ground lightning strokes

Using a computer and postulating highly idealized thundercloud conditions, we have modeled the interaction between a population of raindrops and a region of high electric field. Under favorable circumstances, the interaction produced a downward-moving wave of potential gradient that intensified the preexisting field without apparent limit.

Abstract The cloud-to-ground lightning distribution in Brazil is reviewed based on data from thunderstorm days, flash counters, LF/VLF lightning detection networks, precipitation, and optical satellite sensors. Abstract During the summers of 1958 to 1962, convective clouds over a mountain range in southeastern Arizona were seeded by means of airborne silver-iodide generators. The data collected do not allow a conclusion that the seeding influenced the amount of cloud-to-ground lightning.

Positive cloud to ground lightning return strokes

Several recent papers have reported positive cloud‐to‐ground lightning, but, in our opinion, none provides sufficiently direct evidence that positive return strokes occurred in any given case. Here we present observations that plainly demonstrate the occurrence of positive return strokes in a convective thunderstorm in Florida in August 1982.

Cloud‐to‐ground lightning in Hurricane Andrew

The spatial and temporal distribution of cloud‐to‐ground lightning was examined in Hurricane Andrew of 1992. Lightning locations available from the National Lightning Detection Network were superimposed on infrared satellite images to relate lightning activity to hurricane cloud structure.
