A comparison of intracloud and cloud-to-ground lightning discharges

Lightning discharges were investigated with high time-resolution equipment on both electric-field and electric-field-change meters. The analysis of the electrical records reveals that the late stages of intracloud discharges are very similar to those of cloud-to-ground discharges during the periods between successive return strokes (junction process)

The charges that are deposited by cloud‐to‐ground lightning in Florida

Data from a network of electric field mills at the NASA Kennedy Space Center have been computer analyzed to determine the parameters of a charge model that describes the locations and magnitudes of the net changes in the cloud charge distribution that are caused by cloud‐to‐ground lightning.

Continuing currents in cloud-to-ground lightning discharges

About 200 excellent photographs of cloud-to-ground discharges, taken with a newly designed rotating-film camera, were obtained from very active thunderstorms in 1959 and 1960. The electric-field changes and luminosity variations of the photographed discharges were recorded simultaneously on two oscilloscopes having different time resolution.

Characterization of positive cloud-to-ground Lightning Discharges

We examined 52 positive cloud-to-ground flashes containing 63 return strokes recorded in Gainesville, Florida, in 2007-2008. The U.S. National Lightning Detection Network located 51 (96%) of the positive return strokes at distances of 7.8 to 157 km from the field measuring station and correctly identified 48 (91%) of them as cloud-to-ground discharges.

Abstract Temporal and spatial relationships between thunderstorms (events) and flashes were investigated using data for 1983–85 for 25 first-order stations (10 in the West and 15 along the East Coast). Thunder events were compared with flashes within three ranges: 5 km, 10 km, and 20 km, around each station.
