Negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia
Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2014The characteristics of the negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia are studied by analyzing the electric fields generated by the whole flash in nanosecond resolution. A total of 405 strokes obtained from 100 successive negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes were analyzed, which were recorded from seven convective thunderstorms during

Continuing current in negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1989Simultaneous single‐station electric field and multiple‐station TV measurements on 90 negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning flashes that occurred on 3 days in July 1979 near Tampa, Florida, have been analyzed for the following characteristics of electric field changes indicative of continuing current: frequency of occurrence, duration, duration of ...

On the chances of being struck by cloud-to-ground lightning
2003 IEEE Bologna Power Tech Conference Proceedings,, 2004An assumption of complete spatial randomness has been used to obtain analytic expressions that describe the probability that the closest lightning strike is within any distance of an arbitrary point or a simulated power line, if the area density of strikes in the region is known. Preliminary tests of these functions show that they describe experimental

Relations of Thunderstorms and Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Frequencies
Journal of Climate, 1989Abstract Temporal and spatial relationships between thunderstorms (events) and flashes were investigated using data for 1983–85 for 25 first-order stations (10 in the West and 15 along the East Coast). Thunder events were compared with flashes within three ranges: 5 km, 10 km, and 20 km, around each station.

Multiple Lightning Discharges in Wind Turbines Associated With Nearby Cloud-to-Ground Lightning
IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, 2015This paper presents the analysis of five events where simultaneous lightning currents were registered in different wind turbines of a wind farm with lightning monitoring equipment installed. Measurements from current monitoring devices installed at the wind turbines and observations from auto-triggering video cameras were correlated with data from the ...

Characteristics of downward leaders in a cloud-to-ground lightning strike on a lightning rod
Atmospheric Research, 2018Abstract A natural downward negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning was observed at a close distance of 370 m by using electric field change measurements and a high-speed camera at 5400 frames per second (fps). Two subsequent leader-return strokes of the lightning hit a lightning rod installed on the top of a seven-story building in Beijing city ...

Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of Cloud to Ground Lightning in Guizhou Province
2008 Fifth International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, 2008In terms of observations from the single station lightning location system and the method of statistic, the major weather process, days, frequency and diversification of lightning during 2005~2006 are elementary studied, to show the spatial and temporal characteristics of cloud to ground (CG) lightning activities in Guizhou province.

Positive cloud‐to‐ground lightning in summer thunderstorms
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1982This paper describes cloud‐to‐ground lightning that lowers positive charge to earth over mountainous terrain in the northern Rocky Mountain region. A sample of 14 visually confirmed ground flashes provided criteria for identifying positive ground flashes by using only measured electric fields.
