Infectious bacterial keratitis management in a Swedish region: Risk factors, treatment and time‐to‐resolution

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To report treatment patterns, time‐to‐resolution (TTR) and aetiologies of bacterial keratitis (BK) infections treated in a specialized hospital‐based cornea clinic in Sweden. Methods Retrospective study based on electronic health records screened during the period 2010–2019. The study included only culture‐confirmed cases of BK.

Sepsis and Antibiotics in Extremely Preterm Infants: Early Empirical Treatment Was Common, While Late‐Onset Sepsis Accounted for Most Cases and Antibiotic Use

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim The aim was to investigate the incidence of sepsis and use of antibiotics among extremely preterm infants, given the limited number of population‐based studies examining this. Methods This retrospective study in Eastern Denmark included all liveborn infants from 23 + 0 weeks/days to 27 + 6 weeks/days of gestation from 2019 to 21.

Slime-Producing Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Isolated from Human Eye Infections [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Some strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci produce an extracellular material, slime, which mediates adherence to foreign surfaces, such as indwelling biomedical devices. It is not known if slime is involved in adherence to human tissue.

Lessons Learnt From 25 Years of Endophthalmitis: Causes, Microbiology and Visual Outcome Trends

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Ophthalmology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background We aimed to study the trends in microbiology, precipitating causes and outcomes of endophthalmitis in Victoria, Australia, over a 25‐year period. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest study of endophthalmitis in Australia.

Bacterial biofilms with emphasis on coagulase-negative staphylococci

open access: yesJournal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases, 2008
In addition to their capacity to attach to surfaces, various groups of microorganisms also produce an extracellular polymeric substance known as "slime". This slime forms a thin layer around cells known as biofilm.

Risk Factors of Blood Culture Positivity and Mortality in Bloodstream Infections: A Population‐Based Study of Patients With B‐Cell Malignancies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Bloodstream infections remain a major cause of mortality among cancer patients. Pathogen surveillance and risk stratification tools are key to improved management. This study describes trends in causative pathogens and explores risk factors for positive blood cultures (PBCs) and post‐infection mortality in cancer patients.

Resistance to Methicillin in Coagulase-negative Staphylococci and Its Detection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Resistance of staphylococci to methicillin is important especially in the case ofStaphylococcus aureusisolates. Its impact in veterinary medicine is not exactly specified in coagulase-negative staphylococci; however, these staphylococci may represent an ...

Comparing clinical manifestations, treatment strategies and outcomes of Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteraemia versus Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia – a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus that has been increasingly recognised as a significant pathogen capable of causing invasive infections similar to Staphylococcus aureus. Data comparing the clinical manifestations and outcomes of S. lugdunensis bacteraemia to S. aureus bacteraemia remain limited. This
