Because complications associated with postoperative coagulopathies are significant, prevention, early evaluation, and appropriate management are essential. The etiologies of postoperative coagulopathies are multifactorial and can be evaluated by a systematic clinical approach. Treatment should not be arbitrary but directed at specific defects.

Several genes predisposing to thrombosis have been identified and extensively investigated as contributors to the risk of stroke at all ages and of dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders in adults. This chapter discusses polymorphisms causing prothrombotic disorders that have been studied in case control studies, meta-analyses and genome-wide ...

“Clot-begotten bleeding’ is the essence of the syndrome of consumptive coagulopathy. It occurs in a variety of clinical conditions and its recognition may be vital for management of the patient and his ultimate outcome. A high rate of suspicion aided by the laboratory, is the key to early diagnosis.

Traumatic coagulopathy is thought to be caused primarily by fluid administration and hypothermia.A retrospective study was performed to determine whether coagulopathy resulting from the injury itself is a clinically important entity in severely injured patients. One thousand eight hundred sixty-seven consecutive trauma patients were reviewed, of whom 1 ...

Hemorrhage is the leading cause of death in trauma patients who arrive alive at hospital. This type of hemorrhage has a "coagulopathic" component, specific to major trauma and associated with poor outcomes. Over the last decade, a better understanding of this trauma-induced coagulopathy lead to a new therapeutic approach requiring earlier and more ...

Blood coagulation activation is frequently found in patients with malaria. Clinically apparent bleeding or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with very severe disease and a high mortality. Protein C, protein S, and antithrombin levels were found to be low in P. falciparum, but were normal in P. vivax infection.
