Vegetation in coastal and stream-bank protection

Landscape Planning, 1981
Abstract This review examines the use of vegetation in the protection of land bordering streams and coastal waters against erosive attack. Emphasis is placed on the identification of the environment in which vegetation represents a viable alternative to traditional protective measures based on inert materials, but the latter are only dealt with in a ...

Groundwater discharge to coastal streams – A significant pathway for nitrogen inputs to a hypertrophic Mediterranean coastal lagoon [PDF]

open access: yesScience of the Total Environment, 2019
Near-shore and direct groundwater inputs are frequently omitted from nutrient budgets of coastal lagoons. This study investigated groundwater-driven dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) inputs from an alluvial aquifer to the hypertrophic Or lagoon, with a focus on the Salaison River.

In‐Stream Wetland Mitigation of Nitrogen Contamination in a USA Coastal Plain Stream

Journal of Environmental Quality, 1999
AbstractNonpoint source N from riverine origin is a major water quality problem throughout the world. Nitrogen removal from a contaminated (6.6 mg L−1, NO3‐N) stream was evaluated in this study using an instream wetland (ISW). The ISW was established at the exit of a 425‐ha USDA Water Quality Demonstration watershed in the Coastal Plain of North ...

Role of Environmental Forcings on Fecal Contamination Behavior in a Small Intermittent Coastal Stream: Case Study of the Aljezur Coastal Stream, Portugal

Journal of Environmental Engineering, ASCE, 2016
AbstractThe role of environmental forcings on the fecal contamination dynamics in small coastal streams was investigated, using the Aljezur coastal stream (Portugal) as a test case. An integrated modeling approach, combining hydrological and coupled hydrodynamic-fecal indicator bacteria models, was applied to selected scenarios of relevant forcings, on

Discharge response to channelization of a coastal plain stream

Wetlands, 1992
The Obion River in western Tennessee was channelized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s. The primary purpose was to reduce flooding that inhibits agricultural productivity in the lower bottomlands. Channel enlargement and straightening has improved hydraulic efficiency.

Gravel Bed Composition in Oregon Coastal Streams

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1980
The amount of fine sediments (generally < 1 mm in diameter) in gravel bedded streams is often used as an indicator of habitat quality and also as a measure of the impact from accelerated sedimentation resulting from land disturbance. Five streams in the Oregon Coast Range were studied to evaluate temporal and spatial variability of streambed ...

Ecology of invertebrate predators in a Coastal Plain stream

Freshwater Biology, 1992
SUMMARY1. The spatial and temporal abundance patterns, production and feeding habits of invertebrate predators were determined in a sand‐bottomed, headwater stream in Virginia, U.S.A.2. Annual mean density and biomass of predators in debris dams were 3897 individuals m−2 and 2.5 g dry mass m−2, respectively, but only 711 individuals m−2 and 0.2 gm−2 on

Episodic acidification of a coastal plain stream in Virginia

Water, Air, and Soil Pollution, 1996
This study investigates the episodic acidification of Reedy Creek, a wetland-influenced coastal plain stream near Richmond, Virginia. Primary objectives of the study were to quantify the episodic variability of acid-base chemistry in Reedy Creek, to examine the seasonal variability in episodic response and to explain the hydrological and geochemical ...

Sediment delivery in a semi-arid coastal stream

Journal of Hydrology, 1988
Abstract The transport and yield of bed sediment in a small coastal stream is the focus of this study. Spatial and temporal variations of sediment characteristics have been simulated using a calibrated mathematical model for time-dependent fluvial process-response.

Effects of Logging on Periphyton in Coastal Streams of Oregon

Ecology, 1973
Changes in the stream algal flora were observed during a multi—disciplinary logging study of small watersheds in Oregon. Clearcut logging was applied to one watershed of 71 hectares, while a second watershed of 304 ha was patch—out leaving a buffer—strip of vegetation along the stream channel.
