An Evaluation of Stream Restoration Structures in a Coastal Oregon Stream, 1981–1993

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1996
Abstract A 1.7-km reach of East Fork Lobster Creek, an Oregon coastal tributary of the Alsea River, was treated with mostly full-spanning, rock-filled gabions in 1981 and boulder structures in 1987. East Fork Lobster Creek (EFLC) supports runs of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch and fall chinook salmon O. tshawytscha, winter steelhead O.

Wood Dynamics in Coastal Plain Blackwater Streams

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1990
We quantified woody debris in the river swamps of the sixth order Ogeechee River and several smaller tributaries in the Coastal Plain of the southeastern USA, compared swamp wood with woody debris in the channel, and studied wood movement in the swamp and main channel over 20 mo.

Natural attenuation of indicator bacteria in coastal streams and estuarine environments

Science of The Total Environment, 2019
One of the most significant causes of poor water quality is the presence of pathogens. To reduce the cost of human exposure to microbial contamination, monitoring of Fecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB), as a surrogate for the presence of pathogens in natural waters, has become the norm. A total maximum daily load (TMDL) framework is used to establish limits

Phosphorus Sorption by Sediments in a Southeastern Coastal Plain In‐Stream Wetland

Journal of Environmental Quality, 2006
ABSTRACTA close relationship has been reported between sediment organic C (SedOC) content and its P sorption capacity (Pmax) and total P (TP) concentration. Phosphorus sorbed to organically complexed cations is a proposed explanation for this relationship.

Predicting fecal indicator organism contamination in Oregon coastal streams

Environmental Pollution, 2015
In this study, we used publicly available GIS layers and statistical tree-based modeling (CART and Random Forest) to predict pathogen indicator counts at a regional scale using 88 spatially explicit landscape predictors and 6657 samples from non-estuarine streams in the Oregon Coast Range.

A Quantitative Tool for Assessing the Integrity of Southern Coastal California Streams

Environmental Management, 2005
We developed a benthic macro-invertebrate index of biological integrity (B-IBI) for the semi-arid and populous southern California coastal region. Potential reference sites were screened from a pool of 275 sites, first with quantitative GIS landscape analysis at several spatial scales and then with local condition assessments (in-stream and riparian ...

Biological Integrity in Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plains Headwater Streams

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2006
The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of using landscape variables in conjunction with water quality and benthic data to efficiently estimate stream condition of select headwater streams in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plains. Eighty-two streams with riffle sites were selected from eight-two independent watersheds across the region ...

The Streams of the Coastal Plain of Alabama and the Lafayette Problem

The Journal of Geology, 1929
The Alabama and Tombigbee rivers, which drain most of Alabama and small portions of Georgia and Mississippi, converge at Mobile Bay. The Alabama River appears to have been formed by the diversion of streams which were formerly through-flowing. It is suggested that downwarping in southwestern Alabama caused the convergence of the drainage.

Land-based sources of marine pollution: Pesticides, PAHs and phthalates in coastal stream water, and heavy metals in coastal stream sediments in American Samoa

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2017
The island nations and territories of the South Pacific are facing a number of pressing environmental concerns, including solid waste management and coastal pollution. Here we provide baseline information on the presence and concentration of heavy metals and selected organic contaminants (pesticides, PAHs, phthalates) in 7 coastal streams and in ...

Stream Channelization and Swamp Formation in the U.S. Coastal Plain

Physical Geography, 2004
Most of the major rivers and their largest tributaries in western Tennessee were channelized during the 1950s and 1960s to reduce floods.
