Abstract This chapter describes how satellites detect subtle variations in the ocean color to monitor phytoplankton blooms, sediment transport, and water quality. Beginning with the Coastal Zone Color Scanner on Nimbus-7 in 1978, scientists learned to interpret chlorophyll signatures from space.
