Novel harm reduction measures at music festivals in Australia: Pilot implementation of the Emerging Drugs Network of Australia–Victoria toxicosurveillance methodology

open access: yesDrug and Alcohol Review, Volume 43, Issue 7, Page 2045-2054, November 2024.
Abstract Introduction Harm reduction strategies at music festivals seek to create a safer environment for patrons. The Emerging Drugs Network of Australia–Victoria (EDNAV) project is a state‐wide toxicosurveillance network that derives drug intelligence from a sample of patients presenting to hospital with illicit drug‐related toxicity.

Quantitative analysis of tetrahydrocannabinol isomers and other toxicologically relevant drugs in blood

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, Volume 16, Issue 10, Page 1102-1112, October 2024.
Isomers of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may complicate valid and defensible confirmatory analysis in forensic toxicology. This article presents a multi‐analyte liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry method involving the separation of THC isomers in addition to other commonly encountered drugs and metabolites.

ARRHYTHMOGENIC EFFECTS OF COCAETHYLENE IN ALCOHOL AND COCAINE USERS

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2012
Cocaine and ethanol are two most commonly used recreational drugs in United States. Animal studies have shown that combining cocaine and alcohol produces a cardiotoxic metabolite known as cocaethylene, which is more arrhythmogenic than either of them alone.

Effects of cocaethylene on dopamine and serotonin synthesis in Long–Evans and Sprague–Dawley brains

open access: yes, 1998
We examined the behavioral and neurochemical effects of cocaethylene treatment in Long–Evans ( LE). and Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats. Cocaethylene-induced behaviors were significantly less in LE rats.

Liquid chromatographic determination of cocaine, benzoylecgonine, and cocaethylene in whole blood and serum samples with diode-array detection

open access: yes, 1997
An extraction with Bond Elut Certify solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns is developed for the isolation of cocaine, benzoylecgonine, and cocaethylene from whole blood and serum followed by reversed-phase liquid chromatography with diodearray detection ...

Quantitative analysis of drugs of abuse and cognitive enhancers in influent wastewater by means of two chromatographic methods

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, Volume 16, Issue 9, Page 893-902, September 2024.
Two methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of selected drugs of abuse and a cognitive enhancer in wastewater samples were successfully developed and validated. A two‐column setup was necessary for the analysis of all analytes included in this method.

Hair analysis: Assessment of homemade hair treatment effects on drug concentrations in the keratin matrix

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, Volume 16, Issue 8, Page 801-806, August 2024.
We selected three practices, which claimed to be effective in decreasing drug concentrations in hair. Quantitative results were compared with those of untreated hair strands, used as reference. We evaluated the efficacy of the treatment on drugs of abuse and benzodiazepines.

Dopaminergic, glutamatergic but not opioidergic mechanisms mediate induction of FOS-like protein by cocaethylene

open access: yes, 1997
Cocaethylene is a psychoactive metabolite formed\ud during the combined consumption of cocaine and ethanol. As\ud this metabolite has many properties in common with cocaine, it is conceivable that cocaethylene administration may induce the activity of ...

Markers of chronic alcohol use in hair: Comparison of ethyl glucuronide and cocaethylene in cocaine users

open access: yes, 2007
Two direct ethanol metabolites, namely ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and cocaethylene (CE), in the hair of cocaine (COC) users were compared in this study.

IN VITRO TRANSESTERIFICATION OF COCAETHYLENE (ETHYLCOCAINE) IN THE PRESENCE OF ETHANOL Esterase-Mediated Ethyl Ester Exchange

open access: yes, 2020
This paper is available online at http://www.dmd.org ABSTRACT: This study reports that cocaethylene undergoes an esterase-mediated ethyl ester exchange with ethanol, resulting in an increase in the apparent in vitro t 1 ⁄2, compared with control ...
