Assessing the Application of a Genomic Network Analysis in Population Ecology: Inferring Patterns of Dispersal and Geographic Structure in the Emerging Pathogen, Coccidioides. [PDF]
Machine learning has improved upon traditional methods of identifying population structure and is more efficient at handling large, complex datasets. We demonstrate the applicability of a machine learning method to identify hierarchical population structure in an emerging pathogen, Coccidioides spp., the causative agent of Valley fever.

Taxonomic and diagnostic markers for identification ofCoccidioides immitisandCoccidioides posadasii [PDF]
The ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions of the two recognized species of Coccidioides were studied using a reference set of strains that had been previously identified with species defining microsatellite polymorphisms. Unambiguous identification of the two species proved to be possible by amplifying and sequencing the ITS region.

Genetic analysis of the endemic fungal pathogens Coccidioides posadasii and Coccidioides immitis in Mexico [PDF]
Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a mycotic disease that affects mammals, including humans. Official data relative to CM in Mexico has not been collected since 1995, thus its prevalence remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to identify the predominant Coccidioides species in Mexico, infer their current geographical distribution and explore the ...

Genetic diversity ofCoccidioides posadasiifrom Brazil [PDF]
Studies of the genetic variation within populations of Coccidioides posadasii are scarce, especially for those recovered from South America. Understanding the distribution of genotypes among populations is important for epidemiological surveillance. This study evaluated the genetic diversity of 18 Brazilian strains of C.

Antigens of Coccidioides posadasii as an Important Tool for the Immunodiagnosis of Coccidioidomycosis [PDF]
Serologic diagnosis has been presented as a safe alternative for coccidioidomycosis. However, commercial kits based on coccidioidal antibodies available in the USA are considered too expensive for laboratories outside that country. In this study, we describe the preparation of antigens for detection of human coccidioidal antibodies by the ...

Heat Inactivation of Coccidioides posadasii and Coccidioides immitis for Use in Lower Biosafety Containment. [PDF]
Introduction: The difficulty involved in obtaining sufficient intact genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from Coccidioides spp for downstream applications using published protocols prompted the exploration of inactivating mycelia and arthroconidia using heat under biosafety level 3 containment. This was followed

Unexpected coccidioidomycosis presenting as lung nodules with presumptive diagnosis of malignancy
Unexpected coccidioidomycosis presenting as lung nodules in a patient with a history of malignancy. Key clinical message Coccidioidomycosis can present as fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) avid lung nodules which may be mistaken as relapse in patients with a history of malignancy. Detailed clinical history, relevant laboratory testing, and/or tissue biopsy with

Abstract Background In‐house real‐time PCR (qPCR) is increasingly used to diagnose the so‐called endemic mycoses as commercial assays are not widely available. Objectives To compare the performance of different molecular diagnostic assays for detecting Histoplasma capsulatum and Coccidioides spp. in five European reference laboratories.
