The tympanic covering layer contributes to basilar membrane elasticity potentially influencing human frequency resolution and speech perception

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
In this study we show for the first time that the human basilar membrane contains elastin produced by the so‐called tympanic covering layer. It is believed to play an important functional role in human cochlear tuning, particularly low frequencies linked to our remarkable speech and music perception.

The cochlear morphometry compendium: High‐resolution synchrotron measurements and normative reference values

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
In this study, 100 cadaveric temporal bones underwent synchrotron radiation phase‐contrast imaging. Images were segmented to produce 3D surface mesh models for morphological analysis. Measurements obtained for all cochleae included: standard gross dimensions, various cochlear lengths including basilar membrane length, detailed intracochlear scalar ...

Test-retest reliability of the South of England Cochlear Implant Centre (SOECIC) Music Test Battery (MTB): an investigation of two responses

open access: yes, 2010
The South of England Cochlear Implant Centre (SOECIC) Music Test Battery (MTB) is a new battery of tests currently under development, designed for the assessment of cochlear implant (CI) users’ music perception in the clinic.

CHARGE Syndrome: A Narrative Review and Update on Diagnosis, Assessment and Management

open access: yesJournal of Paediatrics and Child Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare multisystemic genetic condition caused by a pathogenic variant in the DNA‐binding protein‐7 CHD7 gene. The condition affects the development of neural crest cells, which give rise to craniofacial structures, cranial nerves, ears, eyes and the heart, resulting in diverse and complex clinical features ...

Beyond the Adult Mind: A Developmental Framework for Predictive Processing in Infancy

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Predictive Processing has been proposed as the single unifying computation underlying all of cognition, and proponents argue that all psychological phenomena can be explained as consequences of this principle. This theoretical framework has inspired many cognitive scientists and neuroscientists, but it currently has no developmental mechanism ...

Comparison of Conventional Technique with Suture Fixation and Subperiosteal Tight Pocket Technique on Revision Cochlear Implantation Rate

open access: yes
Background: Several fixation methods have been described to secure the cochlear implant’s receiver/stimulator, but the optimal stabilization technique is still being debated.

Sound‐offset encoding is related to speech‐in‐noise perception at sentence level in older adults

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Schematic summary of the study investigating sound‐onset and offset sensitivity in the brain of older adults. EEG responses to white‐noise bursts were recorded to examine neural encoding of sound onset and offset during passive listening and active task conditions.
