Safety evaluation of hydroalcoholic extract of Cochlospermum planchonii rhizome in rats
2013Plant materials have long been known to contain biochemical substances that could have adverse effects on animal tissues. This study was initiated to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Cochlospermum planchonii rhizome on biochemical and haematological indices of hepatotoxicity in adult albino Wistar rats.

Leaf essential oil of Cochlospermum planchonii was obtained by hydrodistillation. GC and GC/MS analysis of the oil revealed that, the oil was rich in sesquiterpenes(51.7%). Nonterpenic and monoterpenic compounds constituted 35.5 and 11.9% of the oil.

Aqueous extract of Cochlospermum planchonii root was investigated for antidiabetic activity in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Thirty albino rats (110.33 ± 8.69 g) were randomized into six groups (A-F) such that group A (non-diabetic) received orally 0.5 ml of distilled water, thrice daily for 10 days.
