The epizootiology of two pathogens of the coconut palm rhinoceros beetle

Abstract Two diseases of Oryctes rhinoceros caused by Metarrhizium anisopliae and a virus were introduced from Western Samoa into Tongatapu, Kingdom of Tonga, in 1969 and 1970, respectively. The fungus remained at a low incidence and did not significantly affect the beetle population.

Invasion alert: the coconut rhinoceros beetle outbreak on Efate, Vanuatu

2023
An incursion of coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB: Oryctes rhinoceros) was reported in Efate, Vanuatu in 2019. The beetle population was determined to belong to CRB-S (Clade II) similar to CRB populations found in the Bismark Archipelago, Papua New Guinea. A second incursion of CRB-G (Clade IA) was discovered in 2021.

Plant derived essential oil is used as a component in management of coconut rhinoceros beetle Oryctes rhinoceros L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). A study was undertaken to evaluate the bioefficacy of essential oil from Ocimum basilicum, Eucalyptus citriodora, Trachyspermum ammi and their major constituent thymolin for management of O. rhinoceros.

The coconut rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros L., is a serious pest of coconut and other palms throughout Southeast Asia and on several Pacific Islands. Adults damage and sometimes kill palms when they bore into the crown to feed. In contrast, larvae feed only on dead plant material at breeding sites.
