Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Elaborating on Thick Analysis: About Thoroughness and Creativity in Qualitative Analysis

open access: yesForum: Qualitative Social Research, 2015
This article elaborates on the concept of thick analysis, introduced in 2010 by EVERS and VAN STAA. The aim of thick analysis is to enhance the depth and breadth of data analysis by creatively combining several analysis methods, allowing for a more ...

Binary Cyclic Codes from Explicit Polynomials over $\gf(2^m)$

open access: yes, 2013
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, monomials and trinomials over finite fields

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

General Linearized Polynomial Interpolation and Its Applications

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper, we first propose a general interpolation algorithm in a free module of a linearized polynomial ring, and then apply this algorithm to decode several important families of codes, Gabidulin codes, KK codes and MV codes.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Optimal Ferrers Diagram Rank-Metric Codes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Optimal rank-metric codes in Ferrers diagrams are considered. Such codes consist of matrices having zeros at certain fixed positions and can be used to construct good codes in the projective space.

Euclidean and Hermitian LCD MDS codes

open access: yes, 2017
Linear codes with complementary duals (abbreviated LCD) are linear codes whose intersection with their dual is trivial. When they are binary, they play an important role in armoring implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks.
