Codling Moth Management and Chemical Ecology

Annual Review of Entomology, 2008
Lepidopteran insects use sex pheromones to communicate for mating. Olfactory communication and mate-finding can be prevented by permeating the atmosphere with synthetic pheromone. Pheromone-mediated mating disruption has become a commercially viable pest management technique and is used to control the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, a key insect pest of

“This is not an Apple”–Yeast Mutualism in Codling Moth

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 2012
The larva of codling moth Cydia pomonella (Tortricidae, Lepidoptera) is known as the worm in the apple, mining the fruit for food. We here show that codling moth larvae are closely associated with yeasts of the genus Metschnikowia. Yeast is an essential part of the larval diet and further promotes larval survival by reducing the incidence of fungal ...

Mating Disruption of the Codling Moth

1997
The codling moth, Cydia pomonella, is the most important pest in pome fruit orchards in Europe, North and South America, South Africa, and Australia (Chapman 1973). The codling moth assumed key pest status where control with broad-spectrum insecticides has reduced the beneficials and created secondary phytophagous mite problems. Mating disruption using

Codling Moth Investigations

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1926
Results, which have been secured since 1922 on the investigation of the codling moth, Carpocapsa pomonella , to determine what type of nozzle and what pressure places the greatest amount of arsenic in the lower calyx cup of apple blossoms, are given in this paper.

Codling Moth Banding Materials

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1928
Preliminary tests of several materials for codling moth banding are here reported. The results indicate that corrugated paper may have a practical value as a banding material, and that tarred paper, corrugated paper, and a tough crepe paper appear to be more effective than burlap.

Orchard Sanitation and the Codling Moth

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1932
An unusually heavy flight of the codling moth ( Carpocapsa pomonella (Linn.)) has been recorded in a certain apple section of the Santa Clara Valley in California during the season of 1931. Records of the same were obtained by the use of bait traps. Lack of orchard sanitation definitely accounts for the conditions described.
