Anthraquinones From Epicoccum sp., a Fungus Isolated From Gut of Dione juno That Feeds on Passifloras

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 6, June 2026.
An Epicoccum fungus was isolated from gut of larvae of the butterfly Dione juno juno that feeds intensively on leaves of Passifloras. This fungus produces hydroxyanthraquinones that moderately inhibits growth of some Bacillus that coexist with the fungus in the insect gut, suggesting that it is probably important for microbial embalance in gut flora ...

From Inventories to Insights: Environmental Gradients Structuring Macro‐Moths Assemblages Recorded in Nature Reserves

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
The article analyses macro‐moth (Lepidoptera) inventory data from 292 nature reserves across the Czech Republic, comprising 941 species. It examines how reserve characteristics, geographic position and altitude influence species richness, community composition and their associations with species traits.

Can Herbivore Feeding Preferences Reinforce the Female‐Biased Sex Ratio in an Alpine Willow?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
Sex‐biased herbivory can vary among co‐occurring herbivores and across the season. Sequential herbivory by species with different feeding preferences may influence the population dynamics of dioecious plants, particularly if early‐season herbivory alters plant traits that affect subsequent foraging decisions.

Urinary Biomarkers of Exposure and Effect in California Schoolchildren From a High Air Pollution Area

open access: yesEnvironmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, Volume 67, Issue 5-7, June‐August 2026.
ABSTRACT Exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse health effects such as asthma, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Children are especially vulnerable due to their developing organs, immature immune systems, and higher ventilation rates relative to their body size.

Stressed Overwintering Bottleneck Hypothesis: Ocean Warming and Acidification Synergistically Disrupt Arctic Zooplankton Overwintering

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 2, June 2026.
Ocean warming (OW) and acidification (OA) synergistically doubled overwintering Calanus glacialis mortality and increased DNA damage. OW accelerated moulting by mid‐Polar Night, boosted metabolism, depleted lipids by early March, 1–4 months pre‐spring algal bloom, and amplified oxidative damage. Collectively, these stressors cause overwintering failure,
