The association of nonsense codons with exon skipping
Mutation Research/Reviews in Mutation Research, 1998Some genes that contain premature nonsense codons express alternatively-spliced mRNA that has skipped the exon containing the nonsense codon. This paradoxical association of translation signals (nonsense codons) and RNA splicing has inspired numerous explanations. The first is based on the fact that premature nonsense codons often reduce mRNA abundance.

Abstract The genomic G + C content of Micrococcus luteus is 75 per cent, the highest of all the organisms that have been examined. Figure 4.1 shows that codons ending with G or C comprise 95 to 100 per cent of all codons (Obama et al., 1990a). In the NNY pair, use of the NNC codon does not reach 100 per cent, and a small amount of NNU is

Release factor competition is equivalent at strong and weakly suppressed nonsense codons
Molecular and General Genetics MGG, 1988We have compared the competition between strong or weak suppressor tRNAs and translational release factors (RF) at nonsense codons in the lacI gene of Escherichia coli. Using the F'lacIZ fusions developed by Miller and coworkers, UAG, UAA, and UGA codons at positions 189 and 220 were efficiently suppressed by plasmid-borne tRNA(trp) suppressors cognate

Reversion of trpA nonsense mutations by deletion of the chain-termination codons
Biochimie, 1989This paper describes a novel mechanism for reversion of nonsense mutations in the trpA gene of Escherichia coli. This mechanism, deletion of the nonsense codon, was discovered in the course of selecting for missense revertants of trpA(UGA211) and for catalytically active tryptophan synthetase alpha chain revertants of trpA(UAA234) and trpA(UAG234 ...

Orientation of Nonsense Codons on the Genetic Map of the Lac Operon
Science, 1967Intracodon recombination is used to orient the nonsense codons UGA, UAG, and UAA on the genetic map of the (lactose) lac operon of Escherichia coli . The 5′-end of these triplets is toward the operator end of the operon.

The effect of nonsense codons on splicing: a genomic analysis.
RNA (New York, N.Y.), 2003The phenomenon of nonsense-associated altered splicing raises the possibility that the recognition of in-frame nonsense codons is used generally for exon identification during pre-mRNA splicing. However, nonsense codon frequencies in pseudo exons and in regions flanking 5' splice sites are no greater than that expected by chance, arguing against the ...
