It has been suggested that cytokines, analogous to vertebrate interleukins, are involved in mediating these responses, though how they may function is not known.

The interaction of staphylococcal protein a with free coelomocytes of annelids
Cell Biology International Reports, 1992The Staphylococcal protein A (SpA) binding protein was detected on the surface of annelid coelomocytes. The flow cytometric analysis revealed that 50% coelomocytes of Lumbricus terrestris react with SpA, a figure six times higher than the number of positive coelomocytes found in Eisenia foetida.

Cellular Immunology, 1976Abstract The coelomocytes forming spontaneous rosettes with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were studied under various experimental conditions in lumbricus terrestris .
