Stimulation of starfish coelomocytes by interleukin-1

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1991
Echinoderms have coelomocytes that are capable of non-specific phagocytosis of pathogens and cellular debris. It has been suggested that cytokines, analogous to vertebrate interleukins, are involved in mediating these responses, though how they may function is not known.

Earthworm Coelomocyte Immunity

1974
The coelomic cavity of Lumbricus terrestris may be considered a hypothetical precursor of the vertebrate immune system. It is in contact with all organs, allowing communication with the coelomic fluid, and with coelomic cells, obviating a specialized lymphatic vascular system.

Application of DNA diffusion assay in earthworm coelomocytes

Environmental Toxicology, 2008
AbstractWe have applied the DNA diffusion assay proposed by Singh (2000) Exp Cell Res 256:328–337, for quantitative estimation of apoptosis in earthworm coelomocytes, exposed to Chromium (VI) and cypermethrin as model toxicants in vitro. The DNA diffusion assay was originally described for mammalian cells.

The fine structure of coelomocytes in the sipunculid Phascolosoma esculenta

Micron, 2010
Ultrastructural characteristics of coelomocytes of the sipunculid Phascolosoma esculenta were studied by transmission electron microscopy. There are several cell types in the coelomic fluid, including three kinds of granulocytes, vesicular cells, germ cells, amoebocytes, phagocytes, and erythrocytes; there are also a new cell complex which is composed ...

The Coelomocytes of Holothuria leucospilota

Journal of Cell Science, 1958
ABSTRACT Morula-shaped cells, structurally similar to fibre-producing cells occurring in the blood and test of an ascidian, Pyura stolonifera, have been found in the coelomic fluid and Cuvierian tubules of Holothuria leucospilota. The morula-shaped cells of the holothurian are formed from primitive amoebocytes.

Separation of Earthworm Coelomocytes by Velocity Sedimentation

1979
Earthworm leukocytes (coelomocytes) are heterogeneous morphologically (1,2) and participate in diverse functions including graft rejection (3), phagocytosis (1), formation of rosettes with SRBC (4), and mitogen responsiveness (5,6). Specific cells mediating these responses are controversial, thus we have developed a procedure for separating ...

The interaction of staphylococcal protein a with free coelomocytes of annelids

Cell Biology International Reports, 1992
The Staphylococcal protein A (SpA) binding protein was detected on the surface of annelid coelomocytes. The flow cytometric analysis revealed that 50% coelomocytes of Lumbricus terrestris react with SpA, a figure six times higher than the number of positive coelomocytes found in Eisenia foetida.

Intermediate filament proteins in echinoderm coelomocytes

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2000
The presence and organization of intermediate filament (IF) proteins in petaloid coelomocytes from two species of echinoderms, the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droehachiensis and the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa, were studied. Two monoclonal antibodies (IFA and Ah6) and one polyclonal antibody (W3-1) that together recognize invertebrate as well as ...

Cytotoxic activity of Holothuria tubulosa (Echinodermata) coelomocytes

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2018
The immune system of marine invertebrates, in particular that of holothurians, still requires further study. Our research showed that coelomocyte cells contained in the coelomic fluid of the sea cucumber, Holothuria tubulosa, are able to lyse, in vitro, red blood cells in rabbits and sheep.

Coelomocytes of earthworms: The T-cell-like rosette

Cellular Immunology, 1976
Abstract The coelomocytes forming spontaneous rosettes with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were studied under various experimental conditions in lumbricus terrestris . The percentage of rosettes did vary with the pH, increased with the incubation period and remained constant at 4°C and at room temperature.
