Determination of tooth cogging force in a hard-disk brushless DC motor

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2005
The paper proposes a new method to determine the tooth cogging force in a brushless DC (BLDC) motor which is used in a hard-disk application. This force might be a source of tooth vibrations and motor noise. In the new method, the permanent-magnet (PM) poles are substituted with their equivalent currents.

Cogging Force Reduction in Tubular Permanent Magnet Actuators

open access: yes2007 IEEE International Electric Machines & Drives Conference, 2007
This paper describes a method to reduce cogging force in the design of a tubular slotted PM actuator for industrial applications. A comprehensive analysis is undertaken by considering a pre-established design in coherence with extended 2D finite element analysis, which enables the determination of the cogging force associated both with the stator ...

Reduction of Cogging Force in Linear Permanent-Magnet Generators

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010
Although linear permanent-magnet generators (LPMGs) are widely used for converting wave energy into electrical energy, they suffer from large cogging force. The cogging force causes oscillatory output power, which shortens lifetime and increases the maintenance costs of the generators.

Reduction of cogging force in linear generators for wave energy harvesting

open access: yesOCEANS 2022, Hampton Roads, 2022
Due to huge energy potential of sea waves, many technologies have been proposed in the last few years. Some concepts have been developed and sometimes also tested in the open sea. Some prototypes use linear generators to directly convert the vertical motion of buoys into electrical energy. This solution minimizes the numbers of energy conversion steps,

A linear hybrid switched reluctance motor with zero cogging force

open access: yes2015 IEEE Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG), 2015
Linear permanent magnet motors (LPMM) and linear switched reluctance motors (LSRMs) are suitable for translational, direct-drive position control applications. Several linear permanent magnet motors (LPMMs) have been investigated [1-3]. However, there often exists unavoidable cogging forces from LPMMs that require additional control algorithms to ...

Cogging force analysis of linear motor arrays driving the Thirty Meter Telescope

open access: yes2011 IEEE 54th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2011
A finite element analysis of the cogging force generated by an array of linear synchronous motors moving on a curvilinear track is presented. This system is under consideration as the driving system for the two main axes of the Thirty Meter Telescope that will be built in Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
