Flywheel Calibration of Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Within the field of lidar measurement it is often debated why it is necessary to calibrate lidars given that they are ‘absolute’ instruments. By this is meant that, given two parameters; the laser wavelength and the frequency at which we sample the backscattered light, we are able to calculate the measured radial speed through the well-known equation ...

Lateral Momentum Transfer in Ice‐Covered Rivers

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Ice cover alters river hydrodynamics by introducing surface roughness. This roughness modifies momentum redistribution and bed shear stress. Using theoretical arguments, we present an approach for the lateral momentum load in ice‐covered streams.

Local-Scale Horizontal CO2 Flux Estimation Incorporating Differential Absorption Lidar and Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
A micro-pulse lidar system incorporating differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) is proposed and demonstrated. Due to the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD),

Bayesian Analysis of Infragravity Edge Waves

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Infragravity (IG) waves (periods nominally 25–250 s) are generated in shallow water by nonlinear difference‐frequency interactions between shorter period (nominally 4–25 s) incident sea‐swell waves. Previous studies show strong IG reflection from the beach face and detectable IG energy in alongshore‐propagating edge waves.

Lidar Uncertainty Measurement Experiment (LUMEX) – Understanding Sampling Errors

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
Coherent Doppler LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has been widely used to provide measurements of several boundary layer parameters such as profiles of wind speed, wind direction, vertical velocity statistics, mixing layer heights and turbulent ...

Three-Dimensional Wind Measurements with the Fibered Airborne Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar LIVE

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
A three-dimensional (3D) wind profiling Lidar, based on the latest high power 1.5 µm fiber laser development at Onera, has been successfully flown on-board a SAFIRE (Service des Avions Français Instrumentés pour la Recherche en ...

Rapid Hydraulic Modelling in Post‐Wildfire Channels Using a Tiered Framework

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 8, August 2026.
A three‐tier hydraulic modelling framework enables rapid, safe calibration of post‐wildfire channel models using remote sensing and limited field data. Tested on two contrasting burned Colorado watersheds, discharge and salt tracer velocity measurements alone captured most of the achievable model accuracy, with detailed bathymetric survey adding little

Investigation of feasibility of wind turbulence measurement by a pulsed coherent doppler lidar in the atmospheric boundary layer

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
Feasibilities of determination of the wind turbulence parameters from data measured by the Stream Line coherent Doppler lidar under different atmospheric conditions have been studied experimentally.

Assessing Cloud and Precipitation Properties on Temporal Scales Using LASSO Simulations Over the ARM Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) Site

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract The representation of low clouds and precipitation remains a major source of uncertainty in Earth System Models (ESMs), particularly due to challenges in representing their sub‐grid variability and scale‐dependent sampling. This study evaluates the performance of preliminary simulations from the Large‐Eddy Simulation (LES) Atmospheric ...
