Variability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation described by three-dimensional empirical orthogonal functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We describe the use of bivariate 3d empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in characterising low frequency variability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) in the Hadley Centre global climate model, HadCM3. We find that the leading two modes are

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Influence of Age Hardening Parameters on the Microstructure and Properties of the AlSi7Mg Sand Cast Alloy / Wpływ Parametrów Utwardzania Wydzieleniowego Na Strukturę I W Łaściwości Stopu Alsi7mg

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2015
Aluminium alloys are characterized by a low density, acceptable mechanical properties and good technological properties. This unique connection of features made aluminium alloys perfect structural material for the transportation industry.

Rainfall variations in central Indo-Pacific over the past 2,700 y [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Tropical rainfall variability is closely linked to meridional shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and zonal movements of the Walker circulation.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Thermodynamic model for lattice point defect-mediated semi-coherent precipitation in alloys

open access: yesCommunications Materials, 2021
Precipitation of secondary phases in a crystalline matrix often leads to the loss of coherency at the phase boundary. Here, a thermodynamic model for precipitation is presented that takes into account the role of lattice point defects on the ...

Climate reconstruction of the Little Ice Age maximum extent of the tropical Zongo Glacier using a distributed energy balance model

open access: yesComptes Rendus. Géoscience, 2022
This study assessed the climate conditions that caused the tropical Zongo Glacier (16° S, Bolivia) to reach its Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum extent in the late 17th century.

The bi-layered precipitate phase zeta in the Al-Ag alloy system

open access: yes, 2017
The Al-Ag system is thought to be a well-understood model system used to study diffusional phase transformations in alloys. Here we report the existence of a new precipitate phase, zeta, in this classical system using scanning transmission electron ...

Evaluation of the effect of TiC precipitates on the hydrogen trapping capacity of Fe-C-Ti alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The present work evaluates the hydrogen trapping behavior of different laboratory cast generic Fe-C-Ti martensitic alloys. Titanium carbides were precipitated in the materials by well-designed heat treatments.
