Umbilical Coiling Index, A Predictor of Perinatal Outcome
Umbilical cord (UC) represents the “life source”, or the “entry and exit” point of humans which is the only source of energy. It is essential for the development, well-being, and survival of the nourishing baby. The characteristic of the coiling of the umbilical cord makes the cord a structure that is both flexible and strong and provides resistance to

Measurement of a Broadband Negative Index with Space-Coiling Acoustic Metamaterials
We report the experimental demonstration of broadband negative refractive index obtained in a labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial structure. Two different approaches were employed to prove the metamaterial negative index nature: one-dimensional extractions of effective parameters from reflection and transmission measurements, and two-dimensional prism ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Umbilical cord coiling index as a marker of perinatal outcome
The umbilical cord is very important for the well-being and survival of the fetus, however this is susceptible to compressions, kinking, traction and torsion which may influence the perinatal outcome and an abnormal umbilical coiling index has been related to adverse fetal and pregnancy outcomes.

In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Modulation of water surface waves with a coiling-up-space metasurface
We have designed a gradient-index (GRIN) metasurface to modulate water surface waves (WSWs). The metasurface is composed of an array of coiling-up-space units with a deep sub-wavelength scale, and can focus/scatter WSWs when the units are arranged ...
