Wastewater treatment risks and challenges for public health and the environment during the Covid‐19 pandemic: a review

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Technology &Biotechnology, Volume 99, Issue 10, Page 2119-2128, October 2024.
Abstract During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), viral transport, fate, disinfection and environmental release in wastewater treatment plants have been issues of high importance for overall management.

Tracking epidemic viruses in wastewaters

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2024.
Wastewater‐based epidemiology has emerged as a highly powerful, innovative, flexible, cost‐effective, and scalable tool for pathogen surveillance, which has been successfully used for monitoring various diseases. Abstract Classical epidemiology relies on incidence, mortality rates, and clinical data from individual testing, which can be challenging for

Polyvalent Coliphages in Sewage

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1991
High concentrations of coliphages were isolated during December and March when the maximum average daytime temperature reaches 20°C. Eight coliphages capable of infecting various strains of E. coli and a few selected members of Enterobacteriaceae were isolated.

Isolation and characterization of coliphages from different water sources and their biocontrol application combined with electron beam irradiation for elimination of E. coli in domestic wastewater

open access: yesAnnals of Microbiology
Background Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli), are high-risk waterborne pathogens that pose a vital threat to the general public’s health.

High-resolution cryo-EM structure of the Pseudomonas bacteriophage E217

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
E217 is a Pseudomonas phage used in an experimental cocktail to eradicate cystic fibrosis-associated Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Here, we describe the structure of the whole E217 virion before and after DNA ejection at 3.1 Å and 4.5 Å resolution ...

Comprehensive analysis of predominant pathogenic bacteria and viruses in seafood products

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 23, Issue 4, July 2024.
Abstract Given the growing global demand for seafood, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive study on the prevalence and persistence patterns of pathogenic bacteria and viruses associated with specific seafood varieties. This assessment thoroughly examines the safety of seafood products, considering the diverse processing methods employed in the ...

Biochemical Characterization of RNA Coliphage MX1

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 1983
In order to clarify the taxonomic status of an RNA coliphage, MX1 (a serological intermediate between groups III and IV), we examined (i) read-through protein synthesis in a cell-free protein-synthesizing system, (ii) the peptide map of the coat protein and (iii) the RNA sequence in the 3'-terminal region of MX1 RNA.

Infection Kinetics and Phylogenetic Analysis of vB_EcoD_SU57, a Virulent T1-Like Drexlerviridae Coliphage

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
The morphology, infection kinetics, genome sequence and phylogenetic characterization of the previously isolated bacteriophage vB_EcoD_SU57 are presented. The phage vB_EcoD_SU57 was isolated on Escherichia coli strain ECOR57 from the E.

A nuclease domain fused to the Snf2 helicase confers antiphage defence in coral‐associated Halomonas meridiana

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 7, July 2024.
Snf2‐related helicases from corals‐associated Halomonas meridiana mediate phage defence. We have characterized a novel defence gene hmaA, which encode a nickase activity containing helicase for defence against Escherichia coli phage T4. The analysis of the hma region reveals an insertion hot spot for defence systems and predicts the presence of several

Isolation and characterization of a phage collection against Pseudomonas putida

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2024.
This study presents the first collection of bacteriophages isolated specifically to act against the common laboratory strain, Pseudomonas putida PaW85. The collection comprises 67 double‐stranded DNA phages, which are classified into 22 species and 9 genera.
