Factors and Mechanism of Loess Collapsibility

1995
This article presents the basic internal factors which determine loess collapsibility: composition and structure, porosity, structural bonds, natural water content. How these factors influence collapsibility is reviewed. The nature and mechanism of collapsibility are studied on the basis of structural changes.

Characterisation of collapsing loess by seismic dilatometer

Engineering Geology, 2014
Abstract Structural collapse and sudden volume changes represent a major geotechnical issue, particularly in loess soils. There are different criteria for assessing collapse potential based on laboratory test results, which require the collection of undisturbed samples from test pits.

Micromechanics of collapse in loess

2014
Soil collapse is amongst one of the most significant ground related hazards. A collapsible soil, in particular loess, typically has an open-structure and collapse occurs when as a consequence of the addition of water and/or load the particles rearrange to form a more dense fabric.

Collapsibility, composition, and microstructure of loess in China

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2016
The collapse potential, mineralogy, microstructure, and particle morphology of a loess from the Loess Plateau, China, were characterized by double oedometer testing, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and image analysis to elucidate the origin of its collapse behavior. Results show that the loess

Collapse and strength characteristics of loess in Thailand

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1992
Abstract Collapse and strength characteristics of loess of Thailand are presented. The metastable loose structure of the soil which makes it susceptible to collapse is mainly attributed to clay-bridge bonds. Collapsibility of the loess is strongly governed by water content and the magitude of applied stress.

Collapse of loess upon wetting

Engineering Geology, 1988
Abstract Feda, J., 1988. Collapse of loess upon wetting. Eng. Geol., 25: 263–269. The results of a series of tests conducted on loess samples from one locality, tested under the condition of confined and hydrostatic compression are presented and analyzed.

A new method of studying collapsibility of loess

Frontiers of Architecture and Civil Engineering in China, 2009
A new triaxial testing system that could control suction in wetting-induced collapsible tests was successfully developed to study the suction effects on wettinginduced collapsible deformation. The pedestal of the triaxial cell was made up of two parts, and the equipment not only could control suction but also could make water accessible to soil.

Characterization of the collapsible mechanisms of Malan loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau and their effects on eroded loess landforms

Human and Ecological Risk Assessment: An International Journal, 2020
Collapsible loess soils are widely distributed in semiarid and arid regions. The eroded landforms formed by the unique collapsibility of loess may cause environmental damage that puts lives and pro...

Unified Catastrophic Model for Collapsible Loess

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2002
A unified model considering the microstructure instability and a set of complete constitutive relations, which describes the volumetric collapse and shearing collapse simultaneously, is developed for collapsible loess in the framework of the catastrophe theory.
