Silica Coating on Colloidal Maghemite Particles
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1999Maghemite colloidal particles are coated with a silica layer using a silicon alkoxide as silica precursor. The coating process is studied by electrophoresis, quasi-elastic light scattering, nitrogen adsorption, and infrared spectrometry analyses. The conditions of complete coverage of the iron oxide particles by silica and the nature of the maghemite ...

Antibody-Like Effects of Colloidal Silica
Vox Sanguinis, 1957SummarySolutions of colloidal silica react with human erythrocytes and, depending on their method of preparation, show the phenomena of agglutination, zoning, blocking, enhanced agglutination with papaintreated cells, and an effect similar to the Coombs test. Cells coated with “incomplete colloid” appear to be capable of taking up an additional coat of

Optical properties of colloidal carbon and colloidal silica films
Applied Optics, 1988Colloidal silica films on glass produced by withdrawal from colloidal baths are of value as antireflection coatings. The effect of particle size on the refractive index and density of these films was determined, and the optimum particle diameter for maximum transmittance of solar radiation through glass was estimated at 45 nm.

Slow aggregation of colloidal silica
Physical Review A, 1987We report the results of elastic and quasielastic light scattering measurements on dilute aggregates of colloidal silica. The elastic scattering measurements indicate a fractal dimension of 2.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06, in agreement with previous results, but the quasielastic measurements demonstrate several novel characteristics.

Clays can lay claim to being the starting point for fine particle technology in the history of mankind. Their use in constructing shelters and in pottery manufacture far predates recorded history. Their particular crystalline structure which confers the plastic-like rheological behavior necessary for forming bricks, plugging holes, and making pottery ...

Colloid Geochemistry of Silica
1979Silica, SiO2, is common in nature and occurs as seven distinct minerals, of which five show crystalline structures (quartz, tridimite, cristobalite, coesite, and stishovite) and two are amorphous (opal-A and lechatelierite). Lechatelierite is a silica glass and is very rare.

Free-Standing Silica Colloidal Nanoporous Membranes
Langmuir, 2009We prepared robust free-standing 200 microm-thick colloidal membranes (nanofrits) with a relatively large area and no mechanical defects by sintering silica colloidal films. The silica spheres used to prepare the nanofrits were 338, 300, or 251 nm in diameter, leading to 25, 22.5, and 19 nm nanopore sizes, respectively. The room-temperature diffusional

Silica Colloidal Membranes with Enantioselective Permeability
Israel Journal of Chemistry, 2014AbstractRobust mesoporous membranes composed of silica spheres were surface‐modified with chiral selector moieties, including small molecules, macrocycles, and polymers. Diffusion rates of enantiomers of a chiral dye through the resulting asymmetrically modified colloidal membranes were measured and the corresponding permselectivities were calculated ...

Surface modification of colloidal silica particles
Colloid & Polymer Science, 2001Colloidal silica particles in organic solvents were grafted, using several reagents, in order to make them hydrophobic. The hydrophobicity of the beads could be easily varied. Quasielastic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments showed that no aggregation occurs during the reaction when monofunctional agents are used ...

Porous Structure of Silica Colloidal Crystals
Langmuir, 2019We prepared silica colloidal crystals with different pore sizes using isothermal heating evaporation-induced self-assembly in quantities suitable for nitrogen porosimetry and studied their porous structure. We observed pores of two types in agreement with the description of silica colloidal crystals as face-centered cubic packed structures containing ...
