Classical light-scattering studies of colloidal silica gels show that they have a fractal structure for length scales shorter than a concentration-dependent crossover length $\ensuremath{\xi}$, and behave like a collection of nearly randomly distributed scattering centers for length scales greater than $\ensuremath{\xi}$.

Synthesis of Colloidal Silica Dumbbells
Langmuir, 2005We describe the synthesis and characterization of stable suspensions of monodisperse fluorescently labeled silica dumbbell particles. Pure dispersions of silica dumbbells with center-to-center lengths from 174 nm to 2.3 microm were produced with a variety of aspect ratios.

Microfluidic Synthesis of Colloidal Silica
Langmuir, 2004We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and operation of microfluidic chemical reactors for the synthesis of colloidal silica particles. Two reactor configurations are examined: laminar flow reactors and segmented flow reactors. We analyze particle sizes and size distributions and examine their change with varying linear flow velocity and mean ...

Mesoporous silica spheres from colloids
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2007A novel method has been developed to synthesize mesoporous silica spheres using commercial silica colloids (SNOWTEX) as precursors and electrolytes (ammonium nitrate and sodium chloride) as destabilizers. Crosslinked polyacrylamide hydrogel was used as a temporary barrier to obtain dispersible spherical mesoporous silica particles.

Hæmolytic Activity of Colloidal Silica
Nature, 1961COLLOIDAL silica is highly toxic when administered parenterally1,2. In isolated biological systems silica has been shown to interfere with some enzymes3,4, activate blood clotting and pharmacologically active substances in plasma5 and interfere with the red cell envelope6.

Fast aggregation of colloidal silica
Physical Review A, 1990The aggregation kinetics of colloidal silica is highly dependent on conditions such as the {ital p}H and salt concentration. In this paper we investigate the aggregation of colloidal silica under conditions that promote rapid growth, contrasting our findings with earlier investigations of the slow growth of silica.

Structural manipulation of colloidal silica
Nanoscale, 2011Structural properties of the nanosized silica Ludox TMA with novel functionalizations have been investigated. Silica is stabilized in aqueous solution at a pH value higher than the pK(a) of silicic acid. A surface modification consisting of poly(p-benzamide)s functionalized with derivatized nucleobases on the C-terminus and cationic pyridinium ...

Restructuring of colloidal silica aggregates
Physical Review Letters, 1986We present experimental results showing that colloidal silica spheres can be induced to aggregate either slowly or very rapidly. The slow process always yields clusters with a fractal dimensionality ${\mathrm{d}}_{\mathrm{f}}$=2.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05, but the rapid process can produce clusters with either ${\mathrm{d}}_{\mathrm{f}}$=1.75 ...
