Properties of heterocysts isolated with colloidal silica
Archives of Microbiology, 1976A method is described for the isolation of heterocysts that are virtually free of contaminating cell debris after sonication of aerobically grown Anabaena 7120. Isolated heterocysts reduced acetylene in a light-dependent process in the absence of exogenously provided ATP; heterocysts supplied with ATP and Na2S2O4 reduced acetylene slowly in the dark ...

Electron microscopy of Ludox colloidal silica
Kolloid-Zeitschrift, 1960The samples of Ludox colloidal silica, previously studied by light scattering, were examined in electron microscope. A considerable aggregation of particles was noted in solutions. The aggregates were efficiently removed by centrifugation, as was previously indicated by the decrease in dissymmetry of light scattered by the same sols.

Surface modification of colloidal silica particles
Colloid & Polymer Science, 2001Colloidal silica particles in organic solvents were grafted, using several reagents, in order to make them hydrophobic. The hydrophobicity of the beads could be easily varied. Quasielastic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments showed that no aggregation occurs during the reaction when monofunctional agents are used ...

Silica Colloidal Membranes with Enantioselective Permeability
Israel Journal of Chemistry, 2014AbstractRobust mesoporous membranes composed of silica spheres were surface‐modified with chiral selector moieties, including small molecules, macrocycles, and polymers. Diffusion rates of enantiomers of a chiral dye through the resulting asymmetrically modified colloidal membranes were measured and the corresponding permselectivities were calculated ...

AbstractAqueous spherical colloidal silica (CS) particles with a diameter of 15 ± 5 nm were modified with three different types of monofunctional silane coupling agents to prepare functionalized colloidal silica (FCS) particles. The effects of the surface chemistry of the FCS were studied as a function of the CS/FCS loading in the poly(dimethyl ...

The stability of amorphous colloidal silica
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1970Abstract The stability of amorphous silica hydrosols has been studied in the presence of alkali metal cations at various pH's. Results show that silica is very stable within appropriate pH ranges, notwithstanding the presence of very high electrolyte concentrations (sometimes reaching saturation). Moreover, coagulation is often reversible.

THE EFFECT OF COLLOIDAL SILICA ON BLOOD COAGULATION
Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, 1961SUMMARYColloidal silica accelerates blood coagulation by adsorption and partial denaturation of a specific plasma protein, the Hageman factor. Quantitative measurements show that the activity of the silica depends on the particle diameter. It is suggested that geometrical relations between the silica and the protein molecules account for these ...
