Porous silica via colloidal crystallization
Nature, 1997Microstructured porous silicas have potential applications in catalysis, separations, coatings, microelectronics and electro-optics, but methods for producing materials with uniform submicrometre pores have not been available. We have now developed a method in which modified colloidal crystals are used as templates for silica polymerization.

Publisher Summary Silicas and silicates are the most abundant solid materials on the earth. Various forms of natural and synthetic colloidal silicas have numerous applications. In this chapter, the term, “colloid” is used for the gaseous and liquid dispersions and/or their aggregates of silica particles, the diameter of which ranges from about 10-5 ...

Adsorption of Colloidal Silica on Alumina and of Colloidal Alumina on Silica
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1964The mutual adsorption of colloidal silica on alumina and of colloidal alumina on silica and silicate materials occurs in aqueous suspension at about pH 4. It is shown that the adsorption of colloidal particles on the surface of opposite charge is limited to essentially a monoparticle layer.

Light scattering of colloidal silica
Journal of Colloid Science, 1959Abstract The absence of absorption in colloidal silica was demonstrated by varying the solvent refractive index of a set of solutions of the same silica concentration and by showing that the excess turbidity and scattering go to zero concomitantly. A spectrophotometer with a 50-cm. cell was used.
