Die uitbeelding van die vroulike rol in advertensies in Suid-Afrikaanse vrouelydskrifte

open access: yesCommunicare, 2022
In South Africa there is growing concern regarding the manner in which women are portrayed in advertisements. Up to now no studies have been undertaken in support or otherwise of this concern.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Highly selective and sensitive colorimetric chemosensor using PVA/chitosan ion-imprinted nanofibers for copper ion detection and removal

open access: yesHeliyon
Herein, a highly efficient colorimetric chemosensor incorporating ion-imprinted electrospun nanofiber was developed for the removal and detection of Cu2+ ions. In this regard, PVA/chitosan composites were used as the polymeric matrix, and 1-(2-pyridylazo)

The cascade of social determinants in producing chronic disease in low-income African-American men

open access: yesInternational Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health & Well-Being, 2018
Purpose: There is a dearth of effective, evidence-based programs to reduce chronic disease in low-income African-American men. We report on the results of formative research in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded MOCHA Moving Forward project ...

Illusion and Illusoriness of Color and Coloration [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Imaging, 2018
In this work, through a phenomenological analysis, we studied the perception of the chromatic illusion and illusoriness. The necessary condition for an illusion to occur is the discovery of a mismatch/disagreement between the geometrical/physical domain and the phenomenal one.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Effect of Hyperbranched Polymers on Curing Behavior of UV Curable Inks in Inkjet Printing [PDF]

open access: yesعلوم و تکنولوژی پلیمر, 2016
A high quality and high resolution printing can be rapidly created by inkjet printing technology. Inkjet printing is one of the most economic printing methods and ink waste in this technique is very low.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Effects of Neutralization and Crosslinking Agents on the Morphology of Chitosan Electrospun Scaffolds [PDF]

open access: yesعلوم و تکنولوژی پلیمر, 2017
Chitosan, a natural polymer derived from chitin by deacetylation process of chitin, has gained an enormous interest in tissue engineering due to its unique features such as antibacterial activity and wound healing properties. Electrospinning of acidified
