Hot spring distribution and survival mechanisms of thermophilic comammox Nitrospira

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2023
Abstract The recent discovery of Nitrospira species capable of complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) in non-marine natural and engineered ecosystems under mesothermal conditions has changed our understanding of microbial nitrification.

Cyclic Conversions in the Nitrogen Cycle

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
The cyclic nature of specific conversions in the nitrogen cycle imposes strict limitations to the conversions observed in nature and explains for example why anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria can only use nitrite – and not nitrate – as ...

Genomic profiling of Nitrospira species reveals ecological success of comammox Nitrospira

open access: yesMicrobiome, 2022
Background The discovery of microorganisms capable of complete ammonia oxidation to nitrate (comammox) has prompted a paradigm shift in our understanding of nitrification, an essential process in N cycling, hitherto considered to require both ammonia ...

Nitrogen Kinetic Isotope Effects of Nitrification by the Complete Ammonia Oxidizer Nitrospira inopinata

open access: yesmSphere, 2021
Analysis of nitrogen isotope fractionation effects is useful for tracing biogeochemical nitrogen cycle processes. Nitrification can cause large nitrogen isotope effects through the enzymatic oxidation of ammonia (NH3) via nitrite (NO2−) to nitrate (NO3−)

Genomic insight into strategy, interaction and evolution of nitrifiers in metabolizing key labile-dissolved organic nitrogen in different environmental niches

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox) are responsible for nitrification in nature; however, some groups have been reported to utilize labile-dissolved organic ...

Chemical Speciation Defines Archaeal Ammonia‐Oxidizer Distribution in Yellowstone Hot Springs

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract The hot springs of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) provide a natural laboratory for investigating the influence of chemical speciation and energy availability on the distribution of microbes. Among 133 inorganic chemotrophic energy supplies, total dissolved ammonia oxidation was consistently one of the highest across 63 YNP hot spring samples.

Linking Abundance and Activity of Ammonia‐Oxidising Bacteria and Archaea in an Agriculturally Impacted First‐Order Stream

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 7, July 2026.
Ammonia‐oxidising archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) coexist in streambed sediments, but their contributions to nitrification remain unresolved. Using field sampling, sequencing, qPCR, microcosm incubations and modelling, we show that AOB dominated nitrification in streambed sediments despite lower abundance, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing ...

Acetogenic Methane‐Carbon Monoxide Comproportionation: An Exergonic but Unobserved Microbial Metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Microbial metabolism relies on redox reactions that exploit chemical disequilibria. While aerobic carbon oxidation, carbon fixation, and fermentation are well studied, the broader space of anaerobic carbon redox reactions remains underexplored.

Cultivation‐Based Detection of a Novel High‐GC Nitrospira Derived From the Argentinian Copahue Volcano Area

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 4, April 2026.
In this cultivation‐based study, two novel moderately thermophilic Nitrospira enrichments were obtained from the geothermal field Las Máquinas in the Neuquén Province, Argentina. Both nitrite oxidizers, belonging to lineage V or the novel taxonomic lineage VIII, contain quorum‐sensing genes and a high genome GC content of 60.6% and 69.4%.

Genome-centered metagenomics illuminates adaptations of core members to a partial Nitritation–Anammox bioreactor under periodic microaeration

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
The partial nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox; PN-A) process has been considered a sustainable method for wastewater ammonium removal, with recent attempts to treat low-strength wastewater.
