Timber and trails: Low‐intensity selective logging and elephant trails shape seedling dynamics in an Afrotropical forest

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 36, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Very low‐intensity selective logging can be a compromise between strict conservation and income‐generating land use in tropical forests. Investigating how selective logging influences the understory environment and seedling dynamics as the forest regenerates offers insights into whether logging alters forest dynamics, influencing the ...

Senecan Progressor Friendship and the Characterization of Nero in Tacitus' Annals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Argues that Tacitus’ shaped his account of Seneca and the characterization of Nero within his social environment according to features characteristic of Seneca’s conception of friendship. Surprisingly, Tacitus assigns to Nero an active power: The emperor

Amphibian Strategies Against Attacks by Flies: Host‐Specificity and Threats

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Species interactions between Diptera flies and amphibians play a significant role in tropical ecosystems, but their ecology and evolution remain understudied. This review explores the costs flies impose on amphibians, such as pathogen transmission and disruption of communication systems, and highlights the evolutionary strategies employed by both ...

A Neocolonial Warp of Outmoded Hierarchies, Curricula and Disciplinary Technologies in Trinidad’s Educational System

open access: yes, 2016
I re-appropriate the image of a space-time warp and its notion of disorientation to argue that colonialism created a warp in Trinidad’s educational system. Through an analysis of school violence and the wider network of structural violence in which it is

Ontogenetic shifts in wood anatomy and leaf traits in tropical dry forests

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 2, Page 848-859, January 2026.
Summary Trees experience changes in environmental conditions and biophysical constraints as they grow that may lead to shifts in functional traits. While ontogenetic shifts in leaf traits are relatively well understood, changes in wood anatomy traits from seedlings to adults are less clear, especially in tropical dry forests where drought strongly ...

Density Dependence Promotes Species Coexistence and Provides a Unifying Explanation for Distinct Productivity–Diversity Relationships

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 12, December 2025.
We develop a mechanistic framework to understand how negative density dependence shapes diversity in complex communities. By modelling resource consumption and species interactions, we show that density‐dependent mortality expands coexistence zones and explains variable productivity–diversity relationships. A derived formula predicts species abundances

Aussie rules: the Internet election down under [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Here’s my thoughts on the new media aspect of the Australian elections. The liberal media in the UK was thrilled that nasty old John Howard was thrown out and Labour’s Kevin Rudd got in. But what I found interesting was how the Internet seemed to play an

Wet Season Environments Drive Local Adaptation in the Timber Tree Dicorynia guianensis in French Guiana

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 23, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The vast tropical rainforests of the Guiana Shield in Northern South America play a vital role in maintaining the region's ecological balance and economy. Increasing pressure from selective logging, gold mining and climate variability threatens these ecosystems. Sustainable rainforest management requires understanding the genetic diversity and
