An Enhanced Strategy to Inhibit Commutation Failure in Line-Commutated Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2020
Failure of the commutation process is a serious malfunction in line-commutated high-voltage direct current (HVdc) converters, which mainly occurs due to inverter ac faults and may lead to outage of the HVdc system. In this paper, an improved strategy is developed that functions based on the SIEMENS HVdc control system under normal conditions and ...

Commutation failures in HVDC transmission systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1996
This paper provides a formulation for the initiation or onset mechanism of commutation failures in line-commutated thyristor power converters, assuming infinite (zero impedance) AC systems. A theoretical development and a parametric analysis is given. Theory validation by simulation and comparison to actual field experience data is also given.

Rectifier Transformer Saturation on Commutation Failure

Fusion Technology, 1989
The rectifier transformer's service differs from the power transformer's service because of the rectifier load. Under certain fault conditions, such as a commutation failure, d.c.

Research on Commutation Failure of HVDC

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
The waveforms of the RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator) commutation failure and ABB MACH2 system commutation failure protection have been combined to analyze the mechanism of HVDC commutation failure. Several reasons for inverter commutation failure have been found, and a detailed analysis is also been given for the missing pulse and commutation which ...

Preventive Control optimization of Commutation Failure Based

2020 IEEE/IAS Industrial and Commercial Power System Asia (I&CPS Asia), 2020
In the hybrid AC/DC systems, AC system failures may cause the commutation failure of DC system, which will lead to DC blocking and affect the safety and stability of the system. This paper proposes a reactive power optimization method to reduce the risk of system commutation failure.

Commutation failure analysis in multi-infeed HVDC systems

2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2011
The commutation failure vulnerability of multi-infeed HVDC converters to ac side faults is analyzed. Faults in multi-infeed systems can cause commutation failure events in the nearby local converter or concurrently in both converters. The immunity of the system to both these events is investigated and suitably parameterized.

Commutation Failure Mitigation Method Based on Improved Commutation Area in HVDC system

2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection (APAP), 2019
Commutation failure (CF) is one of the major concerns in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Of many methods to mitigate CF, advancing firing angle is preferred one since it can be easily implemented in current HVDC controllers without extra hardware modification.

Commutating failure of a single-phase line-commutated inverter

Proceedings of 1994 IEEE Workshop on Computers in Power Electronics, 2002
This paper introduces a new point of view to resolve the commutating failure of a single-phase line-commutated inverter. It is widely believed that the outbreak of this failure is due to the turn-off characteristics of an actual device. From this viewpoint, the safety marginal angle (/spl gamma//sub min/) has been recommended as a practice of ...

Study on commutation failure in an HVDC inverter

POWERCON '98. 1998 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.98EX151), 2002
Commutation failures (CF) are very frequent dynamic events in HVDC power systems. In this paper, a simplified thyristor lumped-charge model is used to analyze the change of the stored charges in the device during turn-off and the commutation process in an HVDC inverter is studied theoretically.
