Bypassing SM strategy applied in interconnected LCC-HVDCs for commutation failure mitigation

open access: yes13th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2017), 2017
Recently, DC current reduction control for commutation failure mitigation is executed through point-to-point LCC-HVDC's rectifier. For an interconnected LCC-HVDC system through MMC-based DC-DC converter (MDC), MDC can be used to reduce the DC current toward inverter instead of rectifier, which will achieve better commutation failure mitigation ...

Commutation Failure Mitigation Method Based on Improved Commutation Area in HVDC system

2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection (APAP), 2019
Commutation failure (CF) is one of the major concerns in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Of many methods to mitigate CF, advancing firing angle is preferred one since it can be easily implemented in current HVDC controllers without extra hardware modification.

Improved Extinction Angle Control for Subsequent Commutation Failure Mitigation in LCC-HVDC

2021 IEEE 11th Annual International Conference on CYBER Technology in Automation, Control, and Intelligent Systems (CYBER), 2021
Extinction angle control is one of the main control strategies to mitigate the commutation failure in HVDC, but the problem of insufficient response speed and control precision still can't be solved effectively based on the current research on measured and predictive extinction angle control.

A Calculation Method of Pseudo Extinction Angle for Commutation Failure Mitigation in HVDC

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2019
This letter presents a novel pseudo extinction angle (PEA) for the HVDC inverter, as well as its calculation method. The proposed PEA extends the measured extinction angle (EA) into a real-time calculated value. As a result, the non-measurability of the EA between two adjacent EA updating times, which is likely to cause commutation failures (CFs), can ...

An Algorithm for Effective Mitigation of Commutation Failure in High-Voltage Direct-Current Systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2016
High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems are being widely employed in various applications owing to their advantages, such as bulk power transmission, long-distance transmission, and power-flow control. However, HVDC systems suffer from commutation failure, a major drawback that leads to increased device stress, interruptions in transmitted power ...

Coordinated Control Strategy for Cascading Commutation Failure Mitigation Considering Reactive Power Interaction

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2022
Cascading commutation failure (CF) caused by the reactive power interaction between HVDC is one of the new forms of cascading failures in multi-infeed HVDC systems. However, the concept and mechanism of cascading CF have not been explained clearly, and few studies have been devoted to control strategy for cascading CF mitigation considering reactive ...

Improved current order control strategy for effective mitigation of commutation failure in HVDC system

2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2017
Commutation failure problem will become more severe when the inverter of the LCC-HVDC system connects to a weak AC system. Suppressing the occurrence of commutation failure as well as improving the fault recovery characteristics of the systems are the urgent requirements for a practical HVDC project in China.

A Dynamic Series Voltage Compensator for the Mitigation of LCC-HVDC Commutation Failure

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2021
To effectively mitigate the commutation failure (CF) of the LCC-HVDC transmission system, a dynamic series voltage compensator (DSVC) scheme is proposed. The DSVC consists of three IGCT-based FBSM chains to match the bulk power transmission of the LCC-HVDC.

A novel method to mitigate commutation failures in HVDC systems

Proceedings. International Conference on Power System Technology, 2002
In this paper we show a method to mitigate commutation failures in HVDC systems due to voltage dips from AC systems. The abc-/spl alpha//spl beta/ transformation is used for three-phase fault detection, and the zero-sequence voltage, which is obtained by the addition of the three-phase voltages, is used for single-phase fault detection.
