Effects and mitigation of post-fault commutation failures in line-commutated HVDC transmission system

2009 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2009
This work analyzes post-fault commutation failures and their effects in a thyristor based line commutated HVDC link. Simulation results of the example case available in PSCADĀ® reveal these failures. Two schemes have been suggested to mitigate these effects.

A combined AC-DC control strategy for commutation failure mitigation

2017 IEEE Conference on Energy Internet and Energy System Integration (EI2), 2017
With the development and maturity of DC technology, it will have great potential in modern active distribution network, smart grids, micro grids, and energy internets. Commutation Failure (CF) is one of the critical problems for DC system operations. The existing control strategies to mitigate CF focus mainly on the control of DC converters, such as ...

Control Strategy to Mitigate Risk of Hybrid HVDC Continuous Commutation Failure

2019 IEEE PES Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference (APPEEC), 2019
The mechanism of continuous commutation failure of HVDC is analyzed and harmonic is considered to be one of the reasons for the continuous commutation failure of HVDC during restoration after AC fault. The harmonic voltage compensation component is added to the link to improve the reactive power support of the MMC-HVDC to the AC system during recovery.

Research on DC Power Control Strategy for Mitigating the Continuous Commutation Failure

2019 IEEE Sustainable Power and Energy Conference (iSPEC), 2019
The method for suppressing the continuous commutation failure is a vital issue of AC/DC hybrid power systems. However, most of existing literature focus on DC control system and even the converter topology, which is not able to meet the needs of control strategy for actual systems at this stage.

A Novel Phase-Locked Loop for Mitigating the Subsequent Commutation Failures of LCC-HVDC Systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2021
The AC fault ride-through and support capability of line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) have significant influence on the safe operation of power system. The ability of phase locked loop (PLL) to synchronize with the voltage phase under AC faults would affect the recovery performance of LCC-HVDC systems.

Improved Firing Angle Control for Mitigating Continuous Commutation Failure of HVDC System

2020 IEEE Sustainable Power and Energy Conference (iSPEC), 2020
The continuous commutation failure (CCF) of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission system will cause consecutive impacts to the AC-DC hybrid power system. This paper proposes an improved firing angle control strategy with the DC power recovery rate and AC fault severity considered to suppress CCF.

Analysis and Improvement of the Multiple Controller Interaction in LCC-HVDC for Mitigating Repetitive Commutation Failure

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2021
In a line-commutated converter based high-voltage direct-current (LCC-HVDC) system, the inverter control system usually includes constant extinction angle (CEA) controller, constant current (CC) controller, current error controller (CEC), and voltage-dependent current order limiter (VDCOL). However, the interaction influence of multiple controllers may

Mitigation of commutation failure method in LCC converter based on HVDC systems by mean of modeling and simulation

Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing, 2020
Commutation failures is the commonest perturbation can appear in the inverter valves during or after the faults. Therefore, understanding the system fault is very important for regulation and protection design. Simulation by means of digital real time simulator can provide quickly the simulation results, and also represents the most effective methods ...

An Improved Control Strategy Based on DC Control System to Mitigate Commutation Failure

2018 2nd IEEE Conference on Energy Internet and Energy System Integration (EI2), 2018
In order to reduce the commutation failure on the inverter side of traditional HVDC transmission, this paper analyzes the mechanism of commutation failure and the response of HVDC system before and after commutation failure caused by ac fault. Based on the shortcomings of dc control system, a traditional de commutation failure control strategy based on

Investigation on an optimized topology design of the HVDC converter valve to mitigate commutation failure

2016 IEEE 11th Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications (ICIEA), 2016
Commutation failure is a common and highlighting fault in HVDC transmission system. According to the physical mechanism of thyristor turn-off process and carrier motion process, topology optimization method of HVDC converter valve is proposed for reducing the occurrence rate of commutation failure.
